Jason Motte (elbow) will throw in an extended spring game Thursday after throwing 20 pitches in an extended spring appearance Monday.

Motte continues to make steady and strong progress in his return from Tommy John surgery. He may need another outing or two in extended spring training, but should find himself on a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later. He should be back in the St. Louis pen by the end of the month.

Jason Motte threw a simulated game in extended spring training in Florida on Friday without any issues.

The Cardinals expect to have Motte back in the bullpen mix by the end of the month and will likely serve as the team's eighth inning option. Outside of deep NL-only leagues there is no reason to make him a consideration with Trevor Rosenthal cemented in the closer role.

Jason Motte said he struck out one and induced three grounders in a 15-pitch extended spring training game Saturday.

Motte has been making outstanding progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He's less than a year removed from surgery and his throwing program has been intense for the given time period. Some speculate a late April return, things have been going that well, but early May seems much more likely. He'll slot in as Trevor Rosenthal's top set-up man once he returns so if you play in a league that counts holds and K/9, then Motte will make for a solid choice.

Cardinals pitcher Jason Motte (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Motte has ramped up his throwing sessions and appears to be ready to return to the Cardinals bullpen at some point in the month of April. Although he is not the team's closer anymore, he still holds slight value for those in need of help lowering ERA and WHIP categories once healthy.

Jason Motte (elbow) said he expects to pitch in a Minor League game on Saturday. He has only thrown simulated games to this point.

Motte is battling back from Tommy John surgery and has not experienced any setbacks up to this point. When back in the mix he is expected to be the main setup man for Trevor Rosenthal, who is one of the top up-in-coming closers entering the 2014 season. If Rosenthal was to slip up at any point in the season, Motte would likely wind back up in the ninth inning role. Until then, he holds little to no fantasy value.

Jason Motte will throw another simulated game on Tuesday. Afterward, it will be determined if he can pitch in a Minor League game later this week.

Motte is doing well in his recovery from surgery and he has the look of someone that will be contributing in the majors at some point in April.

Jason Motte is scheduled to throw his third live batting practice on Friday. The Cardinals have not said whether Motte will be cleared to pitch in games once he passes this next step.

Motte should be able to return to the big leagues in April, and he'll be looked at as part of the bridge to closer Trevor Rosenthal.

Jason Motte (elbow) ramped up the intensity Monday, throwing 20-25 pitches to Minor Leaguers. "I'm pretty close [to maxing out]," Motte said when asked where he felt he was at in his rehab.

Barring any major setbacks, he should be ready to join the Cardinals bullpen by mid-April.

Motte hopes to fill the role of setup man for the Cardinals this year in front of young fireballer Trevor Rosenthal. Motte should be able to see the field in April and is a decent end game grab in NL-only leagues.
