Brendan Ryan (spine) has been cleared to partake in some light on-field activity.

"Light" is the key word here. Not with regard to Ryan's rehab but to his talent. There's no power and there's no speed. He's a defensive replacement, at best, and there is nothing about his game in which fantasy owners should be interested.

Yankees place INF Brendan Ryan (spine nerve injury) on 15-day DL retroactive to March 22.

Tough news for Ryan. A slick fielder, Ryan isn't much with the bat anyway. Yangervis Solarte should see some more work as the utility infielder for the Yankees.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed shortstop Brendan Ryan will not return to game action upon the end of his stint on the disabled list.

Manager Joe Girardi expects Brendan Ryan to start year on the disabled list, barring miracle recovery.

Ryan is an impressive fielder who simply doesn't have a good bat. His value is moderate right now though that could always change if Brian Roberts is unable to remain healthy.

Brendan Ryan said his back feels better Sunday, but said he won’t play this week.

Ryan is expected to be a utility infielder off the bench for the Yankees this season, so the fact that he isn't playing this week doesn't change much. Even if his role was to be expanded, there is little to no chance he will worthy of an add in any league format.

Brendan Ryan was scratched Thursday due to upper back spasms not related to his other injury.

The versatile infielder is fighting for a roster spot so he will want to get back as soon as possible. He has never hit well in the majors so ignore him all fantasy leagues.

Brendan Ryan (back) took batting practice Monday and could return to action later this week.

Brendan Ryan, who hasn't played since last Tuesday because of lower back soreness, could be making some progress. Ryan is hoping he will be able to take some dry swings on Tuesday, then move on to "tee and toss" on Wednesday.

Ryan can't hit major league pitching and is a career back-up.

Brendan Ryan (back) says he's feeling better every day and hopes to play Wednesday.

Ryan, who is expected to be a utility infielder for the Yankees in 2014, will take it slow as he recovers from a minor back injury. The Yankees will likely use a few different starting lineups early on in the season, with Ryan getting a few starts here and there, but that will be hard to count on for fantasy purposes.
