Latest Update Mercer is not in the Pirates' starting lineup on Tuesday Tue Aug, 26, 04:36 PM
Has pretty good home-run pop in his bat, plus decent plate patience, for a middle infielder. Can also steal a few bases. Displays excellent arm strength.
Flaws: : Lacks offensive consistency at the dish, which hurts his chances of playing every day over the long haul. Lacks a bit of quickness when playing shortstop.
Mercer is just 4-for-21 over his last six games so he'll be riding the pine and getting some rest Tuesday. Clint Barmes will get the nod at shortstop.Analyst: Howard Bender
Mercer has been pinch-hitting for the last few games, so he's finally ready to return to the starting lineup. He's currently batting .263 with seven home runs and 41 RBI on the season.Analyst: Howard Bender
Mercer is considered day-to-day with forearm tightness that has held him out of Friday's game and now today as well. If the condition doesn't improve soon, the team will have to take steps to replace him on the roster. Josh Harrison will cover short tonight.Analyst: Ivar G. Anderson
Typically this is an injury you expect to hear from a pitcher which ultimately results in Tommy John surgery. If you own Mercer for now he should be considered day to day but I expect the club will have him get an MRI to see if there's a more serious problem.Analyst: Jonathan Impemba
