Latest Update Jordy Mercer seeing more at-bats in the No. 2 spot Tue Jul, 29, 11:01 AM
Has pretty good home-run pop in his bat, plus decent plate patience. Can also steal a few bases.
Flaws: : Lacks offensive consistency at the dish. Doesn't really have a position to call his own.
It's a move that makes sense given the type of hitter Mercer is and how he's performed against Southpaws this season. He's good for the small ball to get things going early and he can drive in a run when needed. Hitting just .253 overall though, obviously puts him back down in the order against right-handed pitching.Analyst: Howard Bender
Mercer is now riding a three-game hit streak to start the second half of the season, as he continues to be a spark in Pirates lineup. He is now sitting on a .254 average with six home runs and 31 RBI through 303 at-bats, but a .358 average in the month of July is certainly something worth noting if in need of a quick fix at the shortstop position. Mercer has quietly been sizzling hot at the plate for about two months now as he is hitting (51-for-174) with six home runs and 22 RBI, including driving in a career-high four runs on Friday, over his last 48 games dating back to May 7th. He has now reached base safely in 12 of his last 15 plate appearances and he has eight hits in is last 11 at-bats (last four games). If you are lucky enough to find Mercer on the wire I believe I do not have to say this, but go get him.Analyst: Michael Pichan
Considering he's batting just .243 with six home runs and 26 RBI on the year, it was a pleasant surprise to see Mercer put together a game like this. He plated two runs with a first-inning single and then plated the other two with a double in the seventh. He's now hit safely in three-straight games and while it's tough to rely on him for any sort of regular production, he'll still give you some modest stats from a thin position. Nothing great, but he won't hurt you sitting in your lineup.Analyst: Howard Bender
