Latest Update J.D. Martinez is not in the Tigers' starting lineup on Monday. Mon Jul, 21, 06:06 PM
Is a talented batter who can hit for both average and power, especially at lower levels. Can also be a solid defensive outfielder. Produces runs when he's right.
Flaws: : Needs to prove he can hit for a consistent batting average at the highest level. Isn't much of a base-stealer. Can be injury-prone. Isn't great against right-handed pitching.
The Tigers face left handed starter Vidal Nuno tonight and Martinez hits poorly vs left handed pitchers. Also, they are playing in a National League park, so they do not have the option of using a designated hitter. Rajai Davis will start instead of Martinez.Analyst: Mark Kaplan
J.D. Martinez is refusing to fall into a slump as he rebounded from an 0-for-4 (four strikeouts) performance on Friday with his 19th multi-hit game in just 54 appearances on the year. He is the only player in the major leagues who has played fewer than 55 games to have 16-plus multi-hit games and his 13 home runs on the year are third on the team despite playing about 30 fewer games than VMart (21 HR in 80 games) and Miggy (14 HR in 89 games).Analyst: Michael Pichan
While it's tough to imagine him keeping this up in the second half, given the fact that he's never hit like this at any point in his career, Martinez is clearly someone you need in your lineup while he is producing like this. He's hit safely in every game this month and is batting .429 (15-for-35) with three home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored for July. Ride the wave while you can as you simply don;t know when it's all going to come crashing down.Analyst: Howard Bender
June's AL Player of the Month is looking like an early contender for back-to-back honors if he continues to mash the way he has to start of the month of July. The rejuvenated 26-year old is tied with Angels Albert Pujols for the AL lead in home runs for the month with three and his 1.286 OPS in six July games is second in the AL (min. six games) only to another Angel in Kole Calhoun (1.454).Analyst: Michael Pichan
