Swings the bat with huge power. Has a big, strong frame and quick wrists. Also displays the potential to hit for a good average. Can be an impact player when he gets red-hot.
Flaws: : Is defensively challenged, especially at the hot corner. Will sometimes go on huge strikeout binges, and generally whiffs too often. Has had some minor issues with his conditioning.
Alvarez has been dealing with some left knee discomfort lately and was forced from Tuesday's game. He's considered day-to-day and it does not look like he'll need a DL stint. Josh Harrison is covering third base Wednesday.Analyst: Howard Bender
Alvarez has been overly mediocre this season and this doesn't do him any favors. While his average (.239) is right on par with what you would expect, Alvarez isn't hitting for as much power as he did a season ago. Josh Harrison replaced Alvarez at third base.Analyst: David Kerr
That .186 average against southpaws is going to keep Alvarez on the bench against Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu on Monday. Josh Harrison will man the hot corner and bat leadoff for the Buccos instead.Analyst: Howard Bender
Alvarez is now 7-for-29 over his last 10 games, which is nothing special, but enough to boost his slash line to .240/.326/.412 through 308 at-bats. With Tuesday's home run, Alvarez now sits with 14 on the year to go with 44 RBI, which keeps him on pace to reach 30 home runs for the third consecutive season despite an underwhelming first half.
