Latest Update Alvarez is not in the Pirates starting lineup on Tuesday. Tue Aug, 19, 03:35 PM
Swings the bat with huge power. Has a big, strong frame and quick wrists. Also displays the potential to hit for a good average. Can be an impact player when he gets red-hot.
Flaws: : Is defensively challenged, especially at the hot corner. Will sometimes go on huge strikeout binges, and generally whiffs too often. Has had some minor issues with his conditioning.
With Josh Harrison now occupying third base, the Pirates have chosen to go with the left-handed bat of Ike Davis when they face righty Aaron Harang and the Braves on Tuesday. Fantasy owners of Alvarez are going to have to get used to this as the former NL home run leader has been relegated to platoon status.Analyst: Howard Bender
If the Pirates are healthy, it's probably the best way to maximize offensive output. Josh Harrison would handle third while Alvarez supplants Gaby Sanchez. or even the two work out a platoon situation. Either way, it could increase the overall productivity of the team.Analyst: Howard Bender
Alvarez has had a terrible season up to this point, slashing .232/.315/.394 with 15 home runs and 51 RBI through 371 at-bats. However, he has managed to work himself back into the starting lineup each of the last three games, so if he is able to turn things around he cold make for a nice pickup down the stretch if he was dropped in standard leagues. The streaky slugger hasn't played much with the emergence of third baseman Josh Harrison. THe Pirates have been working with Alvarez at first base because they haven't gotten much production from Gaby Sanchez or Ike Davis at that position. He's worth starting in fantasy if he gets regular at-bats as a first baseman. Analyst: Mark Kaplan
