Latest Update Pirates are planning to use Pedro Alvarez as their everyday first baseman Mon Dec, 15, 10:54 PM
Swings the bat with huge power. Has a big, strong frame and quick wrists. Also displays the potential to hit for a good average. Can be an impact player when he gets red-hot.
Flaws: : Is defensively challenged, especially at the hot corner. Will sometimes go on huge strikeout binges, and generally whiffs too often. Has had some minor issues with his conditioning.
Alvarez was a popular value pick in many drafts last year, but utterly disappointed. He hit for 30+ homers in 2012 and 2013, but fell vastly short of a three-peat as he only hit 18 in 2014. Alvarez should bounce back in 2015, and playing first base will be much better for the below-average defender that he is.Analyst: Colby Conway
The Marlins are looking for a corner infielder with power, and have been asking about quite a few of them, including Alverez. The Pirates were looking to potentially trade away the 27-year old power hitter during winter meetings, but the interest in Alvarez was not very high. Now that the Marlins are inquiring on him, Piitsburgh may jump on the opportunity to deal away 'El Toro'. Analyst: Ben Diamond
Alvarez struggled last season hitting .231 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI after hitting .233 with 36 home runs and 100 RBI in 2013.Analyst: Jonathan Impemba
Although Alvarez has a solid glove and a strong enough arm for the hot corner, the Pirates now view the slugger as a first basemen. The Pirates hands are essentially tied in this situation considering the emergence of Josh Harrison and his strong play at third last season. Analyst: Dom Murtha
