Latest Update David Ortiz is not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Monday. Mon Sep, 01, 10:03 AM
Is one of the great clutch hitters of his era and an RBI machine. Owns a lethal combination of plate patience and a monster power stroke. Is a born leader.
Flaws: : Has seen his eye and bat speed decline with age. Is a complete non-factor on the basepaths and isn't a great glove at first base. Could stand to cut down on his whiffs.
Ortiz will take the day off against left-hander Drew Smyly on Monday. He doesn't normally take a seat because of opposing pitcher handedness, so this might be something to watch in the next week or so. It would be a bummer if he became a platoon bat in the final month. Allen Craig will fill in Monday.Analyst: Howard Bender
Ortiz got a little beaten up over the weekend as he was hit on the elbow with a pitch and fouled a ball off his foot. He was given the day off Tuesday to rest and is now back int he lineup. He's, of course, the Red Sox DH and is batting third in the order.Analyst: Howard Bender
Ortiz has been out of the lineup after fouling a ball off of his foot. With the Red Sox no longer competing for a playoff spot there is no reason to rush Big Papi back from injury if he is not 100%.Analyst: Jonathan Impemba
Ortiz left Sunday's game with a bruised foot, and it appears that it will keep him out of the lineup on Monday as well. Tests were negative, so he should be fine and back on the field within a few days. Analyst: Ben Diamond
