Not so many rising IDP to select from this week, but plenty of injuries to report. First week of byes as well, so until we get through those weeks, these reports will tend to be shorter than when the NFL posts a full 16 game schedule.
It's never too early to plan for next week. Check out our Weekly Player Rankings updated throughout the week for who you should sit and start each week throughout the season.
In any event, let us take a gander at who you might want to target for your roster and who you should be dropping to free agency.
Moise Fokou TEN
Justin Houston KC
Reggie Walker SD
Fokou gets to face the Jets and their sad sack running game this week, so if you need to rack up some tackles, he's a very good option. Houston continues to dominate on the field, and I would urge you to grab him if your league mates have been asleep at the metaphorical waiver wire wheel. Walker is only a short term guy, and once Manti Te'o returns full time, possibly this week, his value plummets. Act cautiously and check the Sunday injury reports before starting him.
Osi Umenyiora DE ATL
Gerald McCoy DT TB
Tommy Kelly DT NE
Umenyiora is beginning to make his presence known in the Falcon D, and while he is more of a big play guy, if your league values that sort of production, he would be a smart addition to your team. McCoy is due for a big week, facing the Cardinals, and while I don't usually recommend a DT except in leagues that require that particular position, McCoy is one of those tackles that can make a difference week in, week out in fantasy. Kelly is another great DT that puts up excellent stat lines for the most part. I've been drafting him since I started playing in IDP leagues, and while he is getting older, he's not showing any dimming of the skill set that has kept him in the league these many years.
Major Wright S CHI
Charles Woodson S OAK
Robert McClain CB ATL
Chris Houston CB DET
Wright facing Stafford and the pass-happy Lions is a good fantasy thing. The fact that he's been a prominent DB all these years speaks well of him, too, and if he somehow is available, grab him for the long haul. Woodson may be on his final legs, but with Tyvon Branch on the sidelines, he will see a lot of time on the field and is well worth an add based on the changed circumstances of the Raider defensive backfield. McClain has been residing in the rarefied air of the top 10-15 IDP (not just DBs, I am including stat stud LBs here as well) all season. With the mess that hits the field for Brady in the recieving corps, he is a must add this week, and beyond. Houston was signed to shore up the rocky Detroit defensive backfield, and while that has not exactly worked as planned, he has been a bright spot for the Lions, posting 7 total tackles (5 solo), an INT and a pair of PDs last week. If you need a bye week or injury replacement at CB/DB, consider him.
Russell Allen JAX
Allen is now a 2 down LB, and if I can impart any IDP wisdom this week, it is to tell you that you only want 3 down LBs on your roster. 12 total tackles (7 solo) in three weeks is simply not going to cut the nut in fantasy. Drop him for someone that can post better tackle numbers per game.
Kamerion Wimbley DE TEN
Chris Long DE StL
Jared Allen DE MIN
Wimbley has seen a drastic reduction in playing time, having been on the field for just 6 snaps in Week 3 (out of 59). Guys that don't spend time on the field are worthless in fantasy, so until his PT increases, drop him. Long is a player I have long coveted in my IDP leagues, but he is gone from my teams for the most part now. No sacks on the year (he was supposed to be the pass rush specialist on the Rams!) and 4 total tackles is just horrific. Allen had one good game this year, but his stud status is now genuinely in doubt by me. He is being hurt by the woeful cast around him in Minnesota, but we don't start IDP out of pity. Bench him until he comes around.
Devin McCourty S NE
Bacarri Rambo S WAS
McCourty is still a fine player, but as the deep man in the Partiot's secondary, he is not seeing as much action as in the past. New England's struggles offensively have spilled over to the defense, at least in terms of fantasy IDP value. I wouldn't cut him, but rather would sit him until the Brady-led offense picks up the pace. Rambo has such a great name, but that does not lead to IDP success. In Week 3, Rambo did not play a single snap on D, and while he cools his heels on the special teams unit, he is quite literally worthless in any sort of league that doesn't give points for return play. If you have him in a dynasty league, by all means keep him but not otherwise.
Don't be the last to know. Read our weekly Fantasy Football Injury Report and know the latest status of your fantasy players throughout the week.
All the injury reports below need to be evaluated at kickoff. Teams are notoriously sketchy about injury reports, and we often do not know a player's status until just before game time. The list below is intended as a "heads up" as to what is going on early in the week, and should not be considered definitive.
Aldon Smith SF (suspended)
Technically he is not injured in a football sense, but he is lost for at least a month as he goes to rehab, so he makes this list.
Jabaal Sheard CLE (knee)
Sam Acho ARI (fractured ankle-out for the season)
Robert Geathers DE CIN (IR-out for the season)
Jason Jones DE DET (ruptured patella tendon-out for the season)
Henry Melton DT CHI (torn ACL-out for the season)
Jamarca Sanford S MIN (hamstring)
Jarius Byrd S BUF (foot-questionable)
Tyvon Branch S OAK (ankle)
Roman Harper S NO (knee)
LaRon Landry S IND (ankle)
Leodis McKelvin CB BUF (hamstring-questionable)
Charles Tillman CB CHI (groin, knee-questionable)
