After a dizzying offseason of moves involving the former first round pick of the Rockies, he is now settling down into his lengthy rehab with the Padres. He has pitched at High-A Lake Elsinore already and now moves up a couple of levels to Triple-A. He was only signed to a minor league deal by San Diego in February so there is no real pressure to add him to the major league roster. When he is 100% healthy, he should be in the running for a bullpen spot at Petco Park.
Morrow has been rehabbing from arthroscopic shoulder surgery since it was performed last August. So far he has made four starts between High-A and Double-A this season but his numbers are not great. He is only on a minor league deal so there is no real reason to rush him through the rehab process at the moment. He should be a factor for the rotation in about a month but there is no glaring hole in the Padres starting five right now.
Szczur had to leave Monday's game with hamstring tightness and was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday. Depending on what the results of the MRI are, Kalish could be looking at his first MLB action since 2014. He has played 20 games for Iowa this season and is hitting .368/.471/.509 with 15 runs, four RBI, and three steals. He would take Szczur's fill-in outfielder role if he comes up.
The news over the weekend was that he would make two more starts at Triple-A Toledo before being activated and seeing as how he did that and the ankle has held up with no setbacks, he should be back starting behind the dish in Detroit. Jarrod Saltalamacchia did swing a hot bat in his place but nevertheless he will be relegated back to the backup role with McCann's activation.
Greene has been on the DL since the 29th of April, though it was backdated to the 25th, with a blister on his middle finger. The throwing he did Tuesday is the first he has done since going down with the finger ailment. With him not throwing for almost two weeks, he has to build back up his arm strength and thus the flat ground tossing. Prior to landing on the DL, he had made three starts and posted a 1-2 record with a 6.28 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 14 1/3 innings.
Richardson was bugged by the shoulder in round one and even went for an MRI following Game 6 of the series however he should be good to go for the start of the series against Toronto. The rookie played nicely in the opening round but only put up numbers equivalent to a middle of the road option no matter the format. Toronto should be a much bigger challenge than Charlotte was as they open the second round series on Tuesday.
This is the second time already this season that Thayer has opted out of a minor league deal, the first being with the Orioles near the end of spring training. He wants a chance to pitch in the big leagues but his number at Triple-A Oklahoma City were far from great with a 6.75 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in eight innings pitched. He is now a free agent and could draw interest on the open market.
In the offseason players have more time on their hands and it usually involves going out and having fun with some kind of four-wheeled vehicle. In Walford's case the injury doesn't seem to be a major one and he has already had surgery to repair the damage, but it will cost him spring practice. The hope in Oakland is that the second-year TE will be fully healthy for training camp as he tries to improve on a rookie year that saw him grab 27 balls for 329 yards and three scores. If he does have to miss some time to start the year due to a setback, Mychal Rivera would be in line for the number one tight end duties.
Love was banged up in Monday's Game 1 and eventually left the game with from a shoulder and ankle injury. The fact he has no lingering soreness is good news for Cavs fans as their big man has been dominant in the playoffs so far with five straight double-doubles. Game 2 is Wednesday in Cleveland and it should be another good performance out of Love.
Hernandez has appeared in just two games with the Red Sox this season as he provided depth around infield. With Carson Smith being activated the Sox send Hernandez down to create room on the roster.
