Kendrys Morales Headshot

Morales worked a lot of his defense during the offseason in preparation for a possible platoon role at first base, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.

Morales seems optimistic about playing a bit more on defense in 2017 than he has in recent seasons, but manager John Gibbons made clear Saturday that Morales playing the field is not part of the plan. "He came here to DH," Gibbons said. "Of course you play interleague games, he'll get those games at first, but that's not his job, that's not why he was brought here. We'll get him out there occasionally." The important note to take away from the coach's comments is that Morales won't lose at-bats during interleague play, putting the 33-year-old on track for a third-straight season of 550-plus at-bats.

Brad Hand Headshot

Manager Andy Green said that Hand will make the Opening Day roster as a member of the Padres' bullpen.

Hand had his best season as a professional last season in San Diego (2.92 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 21 holds), something that many pitchers experience when becoming a Padre. It was more than just ballpark factor that contributed to his newfound success, as his strikeout rate (11.2) and FIP (3.12) experienced tremendous growth while the rest of his metrics remained relatively constant. The biggest change Hand made last season was relying on his curveball more than he has in year's past. He threw his bender 31.4 percent of the time last season compared to 15.1 percent the year prior. Hand will look to repeat his 2016 success and should be a decent source of holds in either a seventh or eighth inning role this year.

Ryan Buchter Headshot

Butcher was one of four pitchers manager Andy Green said were locks for the back end of his Opening Day bullpen.

Butcher was the Padres' best southpaw out of the pen last season, posting a 2.86 ERA and an 11.1 K/9 while collecting 20 holds. He should serve a similar role this season as the team's left-handed setup man and be a decent source of holds in leagues that count them.

Taylor Fedun Headshot

Fedun was sent to AHL Rochester after clearing waivers Sunday.

The defenseman has a mediocre seven points in 25 games in the NHL this year, so he could use a trip to the minors to get himself back into the zone. Given that he's been up in the NHL for most of the year, if Buffalo needs a blueliner, Fedun is a likely call up candidate.

Matt Murray Headshot

Murray will start between the pipes Sunday against the Red Wings, Pens Inside Scoop reports.

Murray lost his last start in overtime despite allowing just two goals on 39 shots in the contest. He's 2-0-1 in his last three starts, allowing just three total goals, and will look to carry that momentum into Sunday's matchup. The 22-year-old netminder takes on a Detroit team that's lost five of its last six games.

Justin Schultz Headshot

Schultz (concussion) will likely miss his second straight game Sunday.

The defender suffered a concussion after a hit by Dustin Byfuglien along the boards Thursday. There hasn't been any sort of timetable for return, but some have speculated that Schultz won't be out for an extended period.

Mike Green Headshot

Green (illness) will miss Sunday's game in Pittsburgh, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.

The defenseman missed Saturday's game due to illness, and will miss Sunday's tilt as well. With 26 points and 34 PIM in 49 games, the defenseman has been quietly productive while healthy. His next chance to return will be Tuesday at home against the Islanders.

Devon Travis Headshot

Travis says he's close to full health after having offseason surgery to remove a flap of cartilage from his right knee, Corey Long of reports.

Manager John Gibbons said he expects Travis to be ready for full activity sooner rather than later. "We're going to see how he progresses," Gibbons said. "Hopefully it's not too much longer, but you also want to be smart with it, so he doesn't experience any setbacks." Travis said he's not feeling any pain, although he isn't certain the bone bruise is gone. The second baseman expects to increase his lateral movement over the next few days.

Mark Giordano Headshot

Giordano scored for the second consecutive game in Saturday's loss to the Canucks.

Giordano had gone 10 straight games without a goal before striking in back-to-back games. The 33-year-old is a workhorse who plays in all situations and should be owned in most leagues. After scoring 21 goals last season, his eight goals this time around are a letdown, but he's got 24 points and is sporting a plus-11 rating, so it's hard to complain. Giordano will be a key contributor for the Flames as they battle down the stretch for a playoff spot.

Zack Wheeler Headshot

Wheeler threw a bullpen session on Sunday and experienced no issues, Marc Carig of Newsday reports.

Wheeler experienced tenderness in his elbow after his bullpen session last week, so the fact that he felt fine after today's session is a definite step in the right direction. His status for Opening Day is still very much in question, but it does appear that the young righty is making progress.
