Rob Whalen Headshot

Whalen (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Whalen opened the season on the DL after experiencing some inflammation in his throwing shoulder, something the Mariners wanted to be cautious with after his 2016 was cut short due to a shoulder issue. He'll head straight to Tacoma where he'll likely slot into the starting rotation there, but he could eventually earn a call-up with the Mariners if an opportunity arises.

Andre Ethier Headshot

Ethier (back) is not expected to be ready to return to the Dodgers until June, Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Ethier still hasn't begun baseball activities and is expected to require somewhere near a full spring training prior to returning to the lineup, which pushes back the embattled outfielder's timetable even further. Nothing is set in stone as of now, but a more specific gameplan should come forth once he's able to ramp up his activity a bit more.

Carson Smith Headshot

Smith (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Evan Drellich of CSNNE reports.

Smith was never going to return before June, so the Red Sox decided to transfer him to the 60-day DL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Chase D'Arnaud, who was recently claimed off waivers. He hasn't been given a firm timetable for return, but he has been able to get though multiple bullpen sessions healthy, so he seems to be slowly progressing through his rehab.

Yoenis Céspedes Headshot

Cespedes exited Thursday's game against the Braves in the fourth inning due to what appears to be a leg injury, Marc Carig of Newsday reports.

The Cuban slugger hobbled into second base on a double and immediately came out of the contest. It's unclear if this is an aggravation of the hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier this week or something new, but more details should emerge once team doctors can examine him further. Consider Cespedes day-to-day until further notice.

Rich Hill Headshot

Hill (finger) could pitch out of the bullpen when he's activated from the disabled list, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Manager Dave Roberts seems inclined to keep Alex Wood in the rotation following his excellent outing Wednesday, which could leave Hill out of the rotation for a bit if all else stays the same. Things could change in the meantime, but Hill's value would diminish a bit if he isn't starting ballgames, so monitor this situation as the veteran lefty nears a return to action.
2:23 pm (EST)
Ryan Merritt Headshot

Merritt is 2-1 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through four starts this season at Triple-A Columbus.

Command, Merritt's most valuable asset, has gone awry at the beginning of 2017. Despite his 2-1 record, Merritt is averaging 3.8 BB/9, more than double his average over six-plus MiLB seasons. Opponents have mustered 29 hits in 21.1 innings against the Clippers' starter, leading to an ugly .333 BAA. Despite playing hero for a day in the Tribe's ALCS Game 5 victory last year, the soft-throwing lefty obviously has some kinks in the armor that he'll need to work out before toeing a major-league rubber.
2:19 pm (EST)
Alex Wood Headshot

Wood will make his next scheduled start rather than returning to a bullpen role, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Wednesday's dominant performance apparently opened some eyes in the organization, as the southpaw now seems to be in line to maintain a rotation spot until further notice. It's unclear who gets the hook once Rich Hill (finger) returns from the disabled list, although manager Dave Roberts did note that Hill could head to the bullpen upon activation. Nonetheless, Wood appears to be in line to make his next start Tuesday against the Giants.
2:17 pm (EST)
Chase d'Arnaud Headshot

D'Arnaud was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on Thursday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

D'Arnaud will take the roster spot of Carson Smith, who was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for the 30-year-old. With Pablo Sandoval (knee) and Brock Holt (vertigo) on the DL and Dustin Pedroia still hobbled, it isn't too surprising to see Boston scoop up the super-utility man. D'Arnaud was batting .375 in eight at-bats (11 games) with the Braves before being DFA'd Tuesday. He should offer infield depth for the Red Sox when he is activated.
2:12 pm (EST)
Shawn Morimando Headshot

Morimando picked up his first win of the year for Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday versus Lehigh Valley.

The left-hander was eyeing a big-league job when spring training opened, but was ultimately sent down to provide the organization with rotation depth. Morimando's early-season struggles with Columbus certainly haven't help his chances of earning a spot start for the Tribe anytime soon. Through four starts, the 24-year-old is 1-3 with a 6.65 ERA and 1.75 WHIP, struggling with command (14:11 K:BB) and getting tagged by opposing hitters (.307 BAA) over 21.2 innings.
