Andreas Athanasiou Headshot

Athanasiou, who agreed to a one-year, $1.3875 million contract extension with the Red Wings on Friday, will go through the work visa process and take a physical exam before officially rejoining the team, and once he's settled in will assume a top-nine role with consistent deployment on the power play and penalty kill, The Athletic reports.

GM Ken Holland was finally able to work out a deal for Double A after his agent played hardball with the contract negotiations that lasted through the summer and cut into the first seven games of the regular season; he'll probably miss a few more as he gets his visa and physical taken care of. Athanasiou only averaged 13:28 of ice time last season, but it's a safe bet that he'll see much more rink run after he and his agent took so much time during the offseason reminding team brass just how valuable he is to the Original Six franchise.

Jeremy Lane Headshot

Lane (groin) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Gregg Bell of The News Tribune reports.

Lane has practiced just sparingly over the last three weeks and was initially listed as doubtful for the Week 7 tilt. His absence means Shaquill Griffin will receive the start at right cornerback again, while Justin Coleman will slide into the nickel spot.

Darren Helm Headshot

Helm potted a shorthanded goal on five shots in Friday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Capitals on home ice.

The penalty-killing specialist scooped up a rebound in front of Braden Holtby early in the second frame, but the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner stoned him. However, Helm would exact revenge later in that period, causing a turnover in the defensive zone and going the distance for the game's first goal. It's been a predictable start for Helm, as he has a modest three points (one goal, two helpers) while averaging his typical 15-odd-minutes of ice time per contest.

Anthony Beauvillier Headshot

Beauvillier will draw into Saturday's lineup versus the visiting Sharks, Arthur Staple of Newsday

The Islanders' 2015 first-round (28th overall) draft selection has produced 10 goals and 15 assists through 70 NHL games. He's set to replace Josh Ho-Sang against Team Teal.
11:14 am (EST)
Josh Ho-Sang Headshot

Ho-Sang will be a healthy scratch for Saturday's home game versus the Sharks, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Anthony Beauvillier reportedly will start in his place. Ho-Sang has four assists representing his point total through four games, but he was shut down completely over his last two, so perhaps his riding the pine will afford him the chance to clear his head.
11:11 am (EST)
Scott Mayfield Headshot

Mayfield is dealing with an undisclosed injury that will prevent him from suiting up for Saturday's home contest versus the Sharks, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

The bottom-pairing defender is a "bit banged up," according to Staple, who adds that Dennis Seidenberg will play in Mayfield's stead. Still, this doesn't sound like anything too serious, so consider the former to be day-to-day ahead of Tuesday's home clash with the Coyotes.
11:05 am (EST)
Ronald Darby Headshot

Coach Doug Pederson indicated Saturday that Darby (ankle) remains day-to-day and will be listed as questionable for Monday night against the Redskins,

Darby practiced in a limited capacity Friday and it appears his status will be a game-time call Monday. Considering he hasn't played since the Eagles faced the Redskins in Week 1, it's quite possible he would be on a snap count even if he can go for the contest. If not, a vulnerable Eagles secondary will once again be shorthanded.
11:01 am (EST)
Andrei Vasilevskiy Headshot

Vasilevskiy will be rolled out as the starter for the eighth time in the last nine games Saturday, facing the Penguins at home, Bryan Burns of the Lightning's official site reports.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper is riding the hot hand after watching his team's primary backstop pitch a 43-save shutout against a tough Blue Jackets team on the road Thursday. The two-time defending champion Penguins pose yet another stiff test for the Russian, but it's doubt the guy when he's rattled off six wins and a .929 save mark through his first seven appearances.
11:00 am (EST)
Aaron Gordon Headshot

Gordon (ankle) is questionable for Saturday's game against the Cavaliers and is expected to test his injured ankle out before the game to determine if he can play -- similar to Friday, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The team is on the second half of a back-to-back, so the forward didn't get much time to recover. In his absence Friday, Nikola Vucevic stole the show, dropping 41 points and 12 rebounds. Rookie Jonathan Isaac saw 23 minutes of run as well.
10:53 am (EST)
Jung-Ho Kang (R) Headshot

Kang (suspension) is 1-for-17 with three RBI for Aguilas of the Dominican Winter League.

He also holds a 1:8 BB:K in his first action since 2016. Kang has 90 days to play without a visa before he's required to head home to South Korea. So far he's off to a poor start -- he's also committed three errors at third base -- but the rusty play is expected. Kang's status for 2018 remains unclear as he's still without a visa and could face additional suspensions from the Pirates and/or Major League Baseball when and if he does receive his work permit.
