  • The first-place Nationals continue to take care of business, this time jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, allowing Jordan Zimmermann to put it in cruise control. He worked six strong, fanning seven with no walks, allowing two earned (four runs in total) and six hits.
  • Adam LaRoche led the offense with a pair of hits, a run and two RBI.
  • Jayson Werth had a knock, scoring two and plating one.
  • Drew Storen remained clean since taking over as closer and is making his case for keeping the job into the playoffs.
  • Justin Upton hit his 27th, a two-run shot.

MIN 4, CLE 3   WP Trevor May (2-4) LP Trevor Bauer (5-8) SV Jared Burton (2) 

  • The Twins laid a four-spot on Cleveland in the 4th and then held on.
  • Oswaldo Arcia had the big blow, a two-run shot, his 16th.
  • Trevor May went the necessary five for the win but wasn’t all that sharp, walking four while allowing five hits but he limited the Tribe to just two earned.
  • Other than the blow-up in the 4th, Trevor Bauer was solid, hurling eight innings with whiffs, walking only one.
  • Jose Ramirez had three hits in the losing cause.
  • Carlos Santana scored two while Yan Gomes knocked in a pair.
  • Glen Perkins through Tuesday afternoon and should be good to go Wednesday so Jared Burton was called upon to close it out.

PHI 4, PIT 3   WP Justin De Fratus (3-1) LP Justin Wilson (3-4) SV Jonathan Papelbon (36) 

  • Freddy Galvis had a big night, going 3-for-3 with a homer and a steal with three runs scored.
  • Rookie Maikel Franco knocked in the game-winner as part of a 2-for-4 evening.
  • David Buchanan started for the Phillies, allowing three runs, two of which were earned over six innings, fanning five with three free passes.
  • Russell Martin had a pair of knocks and a couple of RBI in the losing effort.
  • Starling Marte had two hits and his 26th swipe.

TOR 9, CHC 2   WP Mark Buehrle (11-9) LP Neil Ramirez (2-1)

  • The Blue Jays bats were quiet for six but then exploded for eight over the next two frames.
  • Jose Bautista opened the floodgates with a go-ahead, bases-clearing double in the 7th.
  • Edwin Encarnacion and Kevin Pillar had three hits.
  • Mark Buehrle had a typical outing, hurling seven stanzas, scattering ten hits with no walks, fanning three while limiting the White Sox to two runs.
  • Jake Arrieta kept the Blue Jays in check for 6 1/3rd, fanning five, surrendering seven hits and a walk, leaving with two men on base that Bautista drove home.
  • Javier Baez had two hits, two runs and his 3rd steal.

NYM 2, COL 0   WP Jacob deGrom (8-6) LP Christian Bergman (2-3) SV Jeurys Familia (5) 

  • Jacob deGrom did it again, hurling eight scoreless frames, whiffing nine while allowing just three base runners.
  • Curtis Granderson was the only hitter on either squad with more than one hit, stroking two with an RBI.
  • David Wright’s season will end prematurely from inflammation in his left shoulder.
  • Christian Bergman pitched well in his own right, working six solid allowing just two earned.
  • Jenrry Mejia loaded the bases in the ninth before giving way to Josh Edgin and Jeurys Familia the latter of which notched his fifth save.

DET 4, KC 2   WP Max Scherzer (16-5) LP Jason Vargas (11-8) SV Joe Nathan (30)

  • The Tigers pulled into a first-place tie with the Royals behind their ace, Max Scherzer who muddled through 6 2/3rd, limiting Kansas City to just one earned, allowing seven hits with four walks and six punch outs.
  • Rajai Davis launched an early two-run blast.
  • J.D. Martinez added some insurance with a solo shot.
  • Jason Vargas started and served up both Tigers home runs, working 5 1/3rd with six punch outs.
  • Omar Infante had three hits with an RBI and steal.

BAL 4, BOS 1   WP Chris Tillman (12-5) LP Anthony Ranaudo (3-2) SV Zach Britton (34)  

  • Power must be contagious in the Baltimore dugout as Alejandro De Aza muscled up for his first two homers in an Orioles uniform, accounting for three runs.
  • Chris Tillman worked five innings, allowing one run on five hits, fanning five with two walks before handing the ball off to the bullpen who pitched four scoreless frames.
  • After being in a rut so deep there were mumblings he’d be sent down to Pawtucket, in his last ten games including Tuesday night, Xander Bogaerts is 15-for-39 with six extra base hits including a homer last night.
  • There’s a decent chance Dustin Pedroia will be shut down to have surgery on his left wrist which has bothered him for most of the season.

CIN 9, STL 5   WP Mike Leake (11-11) LP Michael Wacha (5-6) 

  • Devin Mesoraco got it all started with a three-run laser in the first, his 23rd. On the night Mesoraco was 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs and three ribbies.
  • Chris Heisey and Zack Cozart also had two knocks for the winners.
  • Mike Leake hurled six strong, punching out six without issuing any walks, scattering eight hits with three earned.
  • Matt Adams and Matt Holliday had a couple of hits each in the losing effort.
  • Michael Wacha continues to shake off the rust after a long stay on the disabled list, tossing four rather shaky innings.

LAA 9, TEX 3   WP Hector Santiago (5-7) LP Colby Lewis (9-13) 

  • The Angels offense has been quiet as of late and remained that way until the 8th inning when they exploded for seven tallies.
  • Before the onslaught, Kole Calhoun led off the game with his 15th big fly.
  • Mike Trout, Howie Kendrick and Collin Cowgill each had two hits with Cowgill also plating three.
  • Adrian Beltre belted his 18th, a solo shot as part of a 3-for-3 night.
  • Ryan Rua had two hits and two RBI
  • Colby Lewis was let down by his bullpen after throwing seven frames, scattering five hits, no walks with four strikeouts. Two of the three runs that scored under his watch were earned.

MIA 6, MIL 3   WP Bryan Morris (8-1) Francisco Rodriguez (4-5) SV Steve Cishek (34) 

  • The Brewers called upon Francisco Rodriguez to keep the game tied in the 9th when K-Rod became HR-Rod as the closer surrendered a two-out, two-run tie-breaking blast to Casey McGehee followed by a solo shot off the bat of Marcell Ozuna.
  • For the game McGehee was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Ozuna was 3-for-3, also scoring a plating a pair.
  • Aramis Ramirez was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Scooter Gennett had two hits in four at bats with two runs.

OAK 11, CWS 2   WP Jon Lester (14-10) LP John Danks (9-11)  

  • Josh Donaldson keyed an 18-hit attack with five hits, scoring twice while knocking in four mates.
  • Dennis Norris had three knocks while Sam Fuld was 2-for-5, scoring twice with two RBI.
  • Jon Lester added to his solid campaign, hurling eight frames of two-run ball, scattering seven hits with three walks and two bases on balls.
  • Dayan Viciedo clubbed his 20th.

HOU 2, SEA 1   WP Collin McHugh (8-9) LP Yoervis Medina (4-2) SV Josh Fields (4) 

  • Collin McHugh was sharp, tossing eight frames, limiting the Mariners to just one run on two hits, fanning four with no walks.
  • Jonathan Villar had himself a night, flashing some leather before driving home the game-winner in the 9th.
  • Logan Morrison took McHugh deep in the 8th.

SD 6, LAD 3   WP Andrew Cashner (2-7) LP Roberto Hernandez (8-10) 

  • Andrew Cashner maneuvered his way through seven innings, serving up nine hits with a walk and two whiffs, surrendering just one run. Cashner helped his own cause with a two-run knock.
  • Jedd Gyorko finally launched his tenth homer, a two-run shot.
  • Gyorko, Yasmani Grandal and Cory Spangengberg each had two hits in the victory.
  • Adrian Gonzalez added to his recent power binge with a two-run shot in the 6th.
  • Carl Crawford, Juan Uribe and Dee Gordon had two hits apiece in the defeat.

SF 5, ARI 1   WP Yusmeiro Petit (5-3) LP Wade Miley (7-11) 

  • Yusmeiro Petit needed only 84 tosses to secure a complete-game four-hitter, fanning nine along the way.
  • Angel Pagan keyed the attack with four hits and two tallies.
  • Joe Panik has his first career five-hit day.
  • Ender Inciarte accounted for the lone blemish on Petit’s ledger, taking him deep in the 4th.
