The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is this weekend which means many fantasy baseball leagues also have their trade deadlines approaching.   Injuries continue to wreak havoc on GMs and time is running out to make moves to address them.  Do not let the dog days of summer make you complacent when it comes to seeking trades to accumulate depth as you pursue your league championships.  Without any further ado, here is the next edition of the walking wounded.

Yoenis Cespedes (OF-NYM)

Cespedes was held out of the Mets lineup on Thursday after his quad injury flared up again.  He dealt with this a few weeks ago so the concern is that this could linger for the rest of the year.  He has been a fantasy stud despite not getting much support around him in the Mets lineup.  As badly as the Mets need him in the lineup, you can expect they will be cautious with their superstar because they need him to carry the team down the stretch.  Monitor his status on a daily basis because this injury will likely cost him some games here and there.

Nelson Cruz (OF-SEA)

Cruz left Tuesday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot and then was held out of the lineup on Wednesday.  He is considered day-to-day and should be back in the lineup for the weekend.  Cruz has consistently been one of the best power hitters in baseball for several years and has proven that even a pitcher’s ballpark like Safeco Field cannot contain true power as evidenced by his 25 home runs and 66 RBI.

Julio Teheran (SP-ATL)

The Braves do not have many players with any fantasy value, but Teheran is certainly one of them.  He epitomizes why wins and losses are not demonstrative of how good a pitcher is because his 3-8 record does not reflect his spectacular 2.71 ERA and 0.96 WHIP.  Teheran was taken out of his last start with a lat strain but he appears fully recovered and will make his next start this weekend.  He may not win many games the rest of this season but he will continue to be a high-end fantasy performer.

Ryan Braun (OF-MIL)

The former elite fantasy player has enjoyed a resurgence this season showing that he can still be a significant contributor on fantasy rosters.  Braun has seen his value take a major hit over the past few seasons due to the PED suspension and a variety of injuries.  However, he has produced solid statistics in 2016 with a .321 batting average to go along with 14 home runs and 12 stolen bases.  Braun was scratched from the Brewers lineup on Thursday with tightness in his side but this is not considered serious.  Expect him back on the field over the weekend so keep him in your lineups.

Jose Reyes (SS/3B-NYM)

Reyes sustained a Grade 1 intercostal strain on a swing earlier in the week and is expected to be out until the weekend.  It doesn’t appear he will require a trip to the DL because the Mets will be able to utilize a DH next week and help ease Reyes back.  He has provided some pop and speed since returning despite a low batting average thus far.  If healthy, Reyes remains a great middle infield option even if he cannot provide the same statistics he did just a few years ago.

Alex Cobb (SP-TB)

Cobb has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery and hit a bump in the road last week with some arm fatigue.  His bullpen session earlier this week was successful and he should be in line to make another rehab start this weekend.  Cobb will still need several rehab starts to prove he can handle the workload so he is still a couple weeks away from joining Tampa Bay’s rotation.  Keep him stashed for now because he could be a valuable fantasy asset down the stretch.

Cameron Maybin (OF-DET)

Maybin has earned a spot on my “never draft” list because of his extensive injury history throughout his career.  However, he seemed to figure things out this year after returning to the Tigers and accumulating a .322 batting average and ten stolen bases in just 57 games.  Unfortunately, he once again he finds himself sidelined with an injury.  Maybin had a rib pop out and had to be put back into place which sounds awfully painful.  As of now it appears he will be able to avoid the disabled list but will still likely need a couple days before returning to the lineup.

Carlos Gomez (OF-HOU)

The disastrous 2016 season for Carlos Gomez continued plummeting downhill when he suffered a hamstring injury this week which could lead to another stint on the disabled list.  He has been abysmal with only a .216 batting average and five home runs to go along with just 12 stolen bases.  Gomez no longer deserves a guaranteed starting spot on fantasy rosters so there shouldn’t be much impact if he misses an extended amount of time.

Nick Tropeano (SP-LAA)

The Angels pitching staff has been completely decimated with injuries to C.J. Wilson, Andrew Heaney and Garrett Richards.  We can now add Tropeano to the list after he was diagnosed with a UCL tear.  No decision has been made yet, but Tommy John surgery is inevitable.  Given the timing of the injury, this will likely cost him the entire 2017 season as well.  He can be dropped and forgotten in all fantasy formats.
