Memorial Day Weekend is upon us which kicks off the unofficial start to summer.  That means that we are getting deeper into the fantasy baseball season and injuries are starting to take their toll on GMs’ rosters.  Without any further ado, here is the next edition of the walking wounded.

Hanley Ramirez (1B-BOS)

Ramirez suffered a contusion on his right foot after being hit by a pitch on Tuesday.  The good news is that he didn’t sustain a fracture as the X-rays came back negative.  However, you can expect Ramirez to miss some time to allow any swelling to subside so he should be considered day-to-day at this point.  Han-Ram has transitioned well to first base despite not hitting for much power thus far so hopefully this injury does not derail his resurgence.

Christian Yelich (OF-MIA)

Yelich has now missed three straight games due to back spasms.  He is considered day-to-day at this point so you will have to monitor his status throughout the week.  Yelich is a must-start as he has matured as a hitter despite his stolen base total being slightly underwhelming up to this point.

Sonny Gray (SP-OAK)

The A’s placed Gray on the disabled list with a strained right trapezius muscle retroactive to May 21.  Gray has been atrocious thus far compiling a 6.19 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through his first nine starts.  Howard Bender and I discussed the possibility that Gray was dealing with an injury last week on the Fantasy Alarm Podcast so clearly we were right.  Oakland is hopeful he can come back when eligible to return but the more likely scenario is that he will be out longer than that.  Stash him on your bench or in a DL slot and hope the cortisone shot works its wonders.

Troy Tulowitzki (SS-TOR)

As sure as the sun sets in the west, Troy Tulowitzki gets injured.  The formerly elite shortstop has struggled all season batting a paltry .205 despite slugging eight home runs.  He was taken out of Tuesday night’s loss to the Yankees with tightness in his quad.  Toronto will evaluate him further in the middle of the week so it is too soon to draw conclusions about the severity of the injury.  Tulowitzki’s injury history is well-documented so it should not come as a shock to anyone if he misses an extended period of time.

Justin Upton (OF-DET)

There have not been many bigger free agent busts thus far than Justin Upton.  The Tigers’ new outfielder is batting just .223 with two home runs through the first month and a half of the season, and now he is sidelined with a groin injury.  Detroit held him out of the lineup the past couple days out of precaution, so right now there is no indication an extended absence will be necessary.  Given how awful he has been to date, would you even notice if he wasn’t in your fantasy lineup?

Jordan Zimmermann (SP-DET)

The Tigers other big free agent acquisition could be heading to the disabled list.  Jordan Zimmermann suffered a Grade 1 strain of his right groin during his last start   He is scheduled to do some long-tossing on Friday and depending on how that goes he could throw off a mound over the weekend, Detroit will want to be extra cautious with their pitching investment so do not be surprised if he lands on the disabled list to allow appropriate time to heal.

Shin-Soo Choo (OF-TEX)

It was a very brief return for Choo who suffered a hamstring injury just a few innings into his first game back after returning from a calf injury.  He was placed back on the disabled list and will miss at least another couple weeks.  Texas is having major injury issues in their outfield so players like Delino DeShields and Joey Gallo could be getting more opportunities in the foreseeable future.

Lucas Duda (1B-NYM)

Duda was placed on the disabled list after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back.  It is expected that he will miss four to six weeks, but it is entirely possible and likely that he will be out even longer.  Duda does have a history with back issues after missing several weeks last year.  His absence leaves a gaping hole at first base for the Mets who do not have viable internal options for a replacement.  He is only worth stashing if you have several available DL slots.

Josh Hamilton (OF-TEX)

See you in 2017…and by 2017 I mean never again on a fantasy roster.
