We are approaching the end of Week 2 of the fantasy baseball season and the good news is that no one has been eliminated from their leagues.  It was an eventful early part of the week with various maladies to report, but thankfully things calmed down over the past couple days so there shouldn’t be any major lineup dilemmas to think about over the weekend.  Without any further ado, here is the next edition of the walking wounded.

Jacob deGrom (SP-NYM)

Cue the panic button now, but it seems likely that Jacob deGrom will miss his next scheduled start due to ongoing tightness in his lat.  He threw a bullpen session on Friday in Cleveland and is scheduled to throw another one on Sunday which will likely determine his status for next week.  However, the Mets will likely be overcautious with the 2014 Rookie of the Year so do not be surprised if they place him on the disabled list and backdate it so he can have a few extra days of rest and only miss one more turn through the rotation.

Devin Mesoraco (C-CIN)

It’s been a brutal start to the season for Mesoraco who missed almost all of last year with a hip injury.  He is just 2-for-19 to start the year and has missed three straight games with soreness in his quad.  The Reds are optimistic about having him back over the weekend so you can put your mind at ease from considering Tucker Barnhart as a replacement.  Mesoraco’s value has plummeted due to his health issues since his breakout 2014 season, so fantasy GMs are just a tad impatient waiting for him to show a glimpse of that prior success.

Brandon Crawford (SS-SF)

Crawford was forced out of Thursday’s game with a hip flexor injury and was held out of the lineup again on Friday.  He is considered day-to-day at this point and should be back over the weekend.  Crawford emerged as a viable fantasy option over the past couple years so GMs have come to expect production from the once one-dimensional shortstop.  He has gotten off to a slow start but generally he can be counted on at this to provide solid offensive production at a scarce position.

Mike Moustakas (3B-KC)

Moustakas sustained a hamstring injury on Thursday and was held out of the Royas’ lineup on Friday, likely as just a precaution.  It’s been said hundreds of times, but hamstring injuries are tricky because they requite time to heal and can be re-aggravated rather easily.  Moustakas has finally blossomed into a viable fantasy option so GMs are hopeful he won’t miss any more time at the hot corner.  Third base has become a very tough position to fill from a fantasy perspective because the drop off from the top three is drastic and players like Moustakas must be depended upon for simply average production.

Pablo Sandoval (3B-BOS)

Proverbial bust Pablo Sandoval could possibly be done for the season depending on the severity of his shoulder injury.  The Red Sox have acknowledged there that this could be serious so it is quite possible Kung Fu Panda will need to undergo surgery.  Sandoval has been a major bust in both real and fantasy baseball, so he had no business being on anyone’s roster in the first place.

Logan Forsythe (2B-TB)

In a scary moment, Forsythe and Kevin Kiermaier collided with each other on Friday.  Forsythe appears to have escaped only with bruises to his left hip and leg, so he should be back within a couple days.  He’s anything but a must-start in fantasy leagues, but Forsythe does provide value due to his eligibility at multiple positions and occasional power.
