The MLB trade deadline is fast approaching and some deals have already been made.  Now is the time for you to pull the trigger on some deals too as fantasy league pennant races heat up and players continue to get injured.  So without further adieu, here is the next installment of the walking wounded.

David Wright (3B-NYM)

The Mets captain has missed practically the entire season due to a hamstring injury followed by a diagnosis of spinal stenosis.  This does not bode well for his season or career, but Wright is scheduled to begin doing baseball activities in the near future.  Even if all goes well and he avoids any setbacks, he is still at least several weeks away from returning in any capacity.  The Mets recently acquired Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson to upgrade their infield depth so they are not even confident of his return either.  Keep stashing Wright if you have the roster slots but don’t hold your breath expecting much.

Matt Wieters (C-BAL)

It’s been a big struggle for Matt Wieters since coming back from Tommy John surgery.  Now he is dealing with a stiff back and was held out of the lineup on Sunday when he was scheduled to play first base.  Wieters is only hitting .234 with three home runs and 12 RBI in just 33 games so he is barely a fantasy option right now.  He should be back behind the plate on Monday but is really only an option in two-catcher leagues.

Dustin Pedroia (2B-BOS)

The Red Sox placed Pedroia on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.  He is scheduled to get an injection which will likely stretch out his stint on the DL beyond the 15 days.  He had been having a solid offensive season but multiple injuries have cost him several games throughout the year.  Boston is barely holding onto any hopes of making the playoffs so expect them to be cautious with their star second baseman.

Wil Myers (OF-SD)

Myers underwent surgery on his wrist back in June and was scheduled to be back by August.  However, he suffered a setback over the weekend while swinging a bat and will be re-examined early this week.  Myers has been limited to only 35 games and has been a major disappointment the past couple years due to a variety of injuries.  This setback almost certainly ensures he won’t be back for at least several weeks so don’t expect much from him for the rest of the year.

Brock Holt (2B-BOS)

Holt left Sunday night’s game after hyper-extending his rounding first base.  He initially remained in the game but the knee acted up on him and the Red Sox took precautionary measures by removing him.  Holt is not expected to miss any time and remains a valuable fantasy asset thanks to his eligibility at multiple positions.  Holt doesn’t provide significant production in any particular category, but he plays every day and offers depth and versatility for fantasy owners.

Randal Grichuk (OF-STL)

Grichuk was taken out of the game on Sunday with soreness in his groin.  It does not appear that this will require a stint on the disabled list.  However, it is very likely that Grichuk will get some additional rest and may miss a game or two.  He has played more than expected this year thanks to injuries to all of the Cardinals outfielders and has rewarded fantasy owners with a .281 batting average, 11 home runs and 36 RBI from an inexpensive waiver wire acquisition.  Check back later on Monday for an update on his status but be prepared to sit him for the start of Week 17,

David Freese (3B-LAA)

Freese sustained a fractured right index finger after getting hit by a pitch last week and will miss up to three weeks.  Freese is not in the upper echelon of fantasy third basemen, but he does have 11 home runs and 43 RBI which is respectable considering the lack of star power at the position.  The Angels acquired Conor Gillaspie from the White Sox to help fill in for Freese in case you are looking for a short-term replacement.
