Week 13 of the fantasy baseball season is upon us as we officially begin summer.  By this point in the season, you generally know whether you are a contender or a pretender.  If you have any aspirations of making a run towards your league’s playoffs, now is the time to make your move through trades.  The injuries continue to pile up, so hopefully you have been making savvy waiver wire moves and building depth on your roster.  That being said, let’s get to this edition of the walking wounded.

Jose Bautista (OF-TOR)

Jose Bautista Newly named home run derby captain Jose Bautista left Sunday’s game with a mild hamstring injury.  He was held out of the lineup on Monday and will likely miss a few games.  Fortunately it looks like Bautista will not need to go on the disabled list, but that is mild consolation for weekly fantasy baseball GM’s who had to start him knowing he would be out for a few games.

Michael Wacha (SP-STL)

Michael Wacha Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha has been placed on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his shoulder.  He has been pitching with this for his last few starts, but you would never be able to tell he was in any type of pain or discomfort.  The Cardinals finally decided to shut down the budding star pitcher who has been stellar this year despite only having a 5-5 record.  Wacha’s peripheral statistics are terrific with a 2.79 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 90.1 innings.  Put him on your DL and wait it out.

Brandon Phillips (2B-CIN)

Brandon Phillips missed Monday’s game with a bruised heel that he sustained over the weekend.  The severity of the injury is currently unknown, so it is too soon to speculate whether he will be out for an extended period of time.  Keep him benched in daily leagues for now.

Andrew Cashner (SP-SD)

For the second time this season, Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner has been placed on the disabled list.  He missed time earlier this year with an elbow injury, and now he will be out at least a few weeks with a shoulder issue.  He was scratched from his start this past Monday, so San Diego understandably wanted to be cautious with Cashner and shut him down to allow sufficient time to heal.  Cashner deserves far better results than a 2-6 record, but that is what happens when you pitch at PedCo Park with no run support.  His peripheral statistics are outstanding with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  His strikeout totals have been down, that is more of a sign of maturity where he is becoming a pitcher and not merely a thrower.  Stash him on your DL and hope he comes right back after two weeks.

Brett Lawrie (3B-TOR)

Oft-injured and frequently disappointing third baseman Brett Lawrie will miss the next three to six weeks with a fractured right index finger.  He was taken out of Sunday’s game after being hit by a pitch, but it was the third time in a week he had been hit on the hand.  Lawrie has loads of talent and potential, but he has yet to put it all together.  Stash him if you have roster space and flexibility.

Jaime Garcia (SP-STL)

Jaime Garcia After coming back this past May from major shoulder surgery, Jaime Garcia had been pitching well with a 3-1 record and a 4.12 ERA.  But he recently suffered a setback and has landed back on the disabled list.  It isn’t known how long he will be out, but shoulder injuries are very serious so it will likely be awhile before we see Garcia again.  He can be dropped if you need the roster space.
