As we begin Week 12 of the fantasy baseball season, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how the hearts of baseball fans all around the world were saddened by the tragic news of Tony Gwynn’s death.  Gwynn is unquestionably one of the greatest hitters of all time and was truly deserving of his election in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.  To honor Mr. Gwynn’s memory and legacy, he would want us to continue talking about baseball.  So the show must go on and we must delve into this edition of the walking wounded.

Carlos Gomez (OF-MIL)

It seems like there is always something going on with Carlos Gomez.  The budding superstar was given the night off on Monday to rest a sore hamstring.  It is no secret that hamstring injuries can be very tricky and require sufficient rest to ensure they either don’t recur or get aggravated.  As he is maturing as a hitter, Gomez is running less on the bases which will help limit the opportunities for him to possibly hurt himself further.  All indications are that he will be back in the lineup on Tuesday, but bear in mind that Gomez has had a variety of ailments and is one aggressive play away from being sidelined for an extended period of time.

Michael Brantley (OF-CLE)

The timing could not be any worse for GM’s who may have to be without Michael Brantley for a few days.  Brantley was taken out of Monday’s game after sustaining a blow to the head while sliding into second base.  We can expect the Indians to run some tests and put Brantley through the concussion protocol before clearing him to return.  Brantley has emerged as a true fantasy star this year so be patient and hope he doesn’t lose his momentum with some anticipated time off.

Salvador Perez (C-KC)

After having a torrid Week 11, Salvador Perez picked up right where he left off to start Week 12 with two more hits.  However, he was removed from Monday’s game with cramps in both calves.  This sounds like a possible dehydration issue but right now we don’t know if it is anything more serious. Don’t jump to conclusions until we know more.  For now Perez is a must start in any league format so let’s hope he doesn’t miss much, if any, time.

Matt Wieters (C-BAL)

After weeks of speculation, Matt Wieters will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.  He has been out since early May and was hoping rest and rehab would allow him to come back.  Unfortunately for fantasy GM’s, one of the best hitting catchers in the league is officially done for the 2014 season.  He can be dropped in redraft leagues without hesitation.  Assuming everything goes smoothly with the surgery and his rehab, he should be ready for the beginning of the 2015 season.

Torii Hunter (OF-DET)

Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter was taken out of Monday night’s game with a cramp in his hamstring.  There is no indication yet as to the severity of the injury, but it is safe to assume he will be given some time off to heal up.  Hunter has defied Father Time and is still a relatively productive fantasy outfielder.  But it is never a good thing for a 38-year old player to develop hamstring issues.  Beware.

Christian Yelich (OF-MIA)

The Marlins have placed outfielder Christian Yelich on the disabled list with a lower back strain.  Yelich has been average at best during his sophomore season so you shouldn't have much trouble replacing him.  Yelich is more of a long-term keeper player because he hasn't fully developed yet into an all-around consistent hitter.  Only stash him on your DL if you are in a deep league and have sufficient available DL slots.
