When I write the Stack the Deck article, I sometimes struggle to determine how many players I should recommend for each stack. When I find a matchup I really like I often want to recommend all of the hitters in that matchup. I try not to do that, because it isn’t that helpful, but I don’t like the idea of steering my readers away from options who could be really good, even if I like some of their teammates a bit better.

I suppose this is my long-winded way of suggesting you pay more attention to the teams I recommend and less attention to the actual names. I listed the four Tigers I like best below, but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone who wanted to use Ian Kinsler and/or Nick Castellanos, especially since they should be at the top of the order. Maybe you look at the third base options and decide you want to use Maikel Franco because no one else appeals to you. That is totally reasonable, even if I think Michael Saunders is a better value in a vacuum. As always, if you have any questions regarding these stacks, in the comments below, in the FANation forums or on Twitter

My Stacks for Wednesday, May 17

Detroit Tigers vs. Ubaldo Jimenez

J.D. Martinez, Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton, James McCann

Ubaldo Jimenz has a 6.15 ERA and 1.51 WHIP this season. J.D. Martinez has two multi-homer games in four contests since returning from the DL while Victor Martinez is working on a nine-game hitting streak. It might be tempting to include Nick Castellanos in a stack, but you should resist that temptation. Castellanos is 0-for-9 against Ubaldo and 2-for-24 over his last six games.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Matt Harvey

Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb, David Peralta, Chris Owings, Brandon Drury, Rey Fuentes, Gregor Blanco

Matt Harvey has allowed at least five earned runs in three consecutive starts, and two of those were against Atlanta.  Arizona  has the highest home wOBA in baseball this season, and Lamb, Owings, Drury and Peralta are all batting .368 or better over the last week. Rey Fuentes and Gregor Blanco have split the leadoff duties since A.J. Pollock went down, and whoever bats first Wednesday will be a very nice value play. If David Peralta misses another game, Chris Owings would have a little extra value if he bats second again.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Andrew Cashner

Cesar Hernandez, Odubel Herrera, Michael Saunders, Tommy Joseph, Aaron Altherr

Andrew Cashner has a 2.43 ERA, 5.16 FIP and 5.77 xFIP. He has allowed more walks than strikeouts this season. He is due for a blowup, probably at home. Tommy Joseph appears to be breaking out with three home runs during his five-game hitting streak, and I love the guys batting ahead of him in the order.

Texas Rangers vs. Zach Eflin

Elvis Andrus, Nomar Mazara, Jonathan Lucroy, Delino DeShields, Mike Napoli

Delino DeShields has led off the last two games with Shin-Soo Choo out, and while Choo is the better hitter, DeShields is a great value at the top of the order.  Mazara, Lucroy and even Andrus are swinging hot bats of late, and it is a bonus that they are batting in the heart of the order. Zach Eflin has a 4.34 FIP and 4.78 K/9 this season, and even if he is a slightly better pitcher than he showed in 2016, the Rangers should take advantage of this matchup at home.
