Does anyone else find that when they stack they tend to gravitate towards right-handed heavy lineups facing a weak lefty? It isn’t necessarily something I do consciously; I think those situations just lend themselves to stacking. Most teams have at least one or two right-handed bats off the bench who mash lefties and don’t cost very much, and it is easy to stack those with a couple of regulars batting high in the order.

Only one of the starting pitchers in Monday’s slate is a lefty. I haven’t been paying close enough attention to say how rare this is, but I certainly don’t remember the last time there was only one lefty in a slate. Manaea isn’t exactly Clayton Kershaw, and the Mariners have plenty of hitters who should be good against lefties, even if they have the fifth-lowest wOBA in the league against southpaws this season. They make the honorable mention section, but I personally will look to stack some cheaper hitters against some of the weaker righties pitching Monday.

Stacks for Monday, May 15

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Matt Cain

Yasmani Grandal, Joc Pederson, Corey Seager, Justin Turner, Chase Utley, Yasiel Puig

I wouldn’t argue if you wanted to use any Dodger in a stack. The Dodgers have one of the lineups in baseball; only the Mets have a higher wOBA in May. Joc Pederson is the only player who has been a bit disappointing lately, going 3-for-13 in a four-game set at Coors Field, but he gets a pass because he leads off and he is pretty cheap on FanDuel. I like the idea of stacking Pederson with the bottom of the Dodgers’s lineup, as Yasiel Puig is 6-for-17 with a home run against Matt Cain while Chase Utley is 11-for-30 with four homers. Utley is 8-for-17 over the last week. For his part, Matt Cain has only had one blowup so far this season, but with a 4.54 ERA, 4.39 FIP and 1.51 WHIP, another one is probably coming sooner than later.

Chicago White Sox vs. Jesse Chavez

Leury Garcia, Yolmer Sanchez, Avisail Garcia, Jose Abreu, Todd Frazier, Tim Anderson

I’m assuming Leury Garcia and Sanchez will stay at the top of the lineup considering they and Avisail Garcia are the only White Sox who are hitting right now. With Tim Anderson returning, Tyler Saladino should be the odd man out of the lineup. Sanchez and Leury Garcia are cheap enough and hot enough that I may include them in a stack no matter where they bat in the order. Leury Garcia is 12-for-29 during his seven-game hitting streak while Sanchez is 10-for-20 over his last six games. On the other side, Jesse Chavez has allowed at least two walks in six consecutive starts.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Zack Wheeler

Brandon Drury, Chris Owings, Nick Ahmed, Gregor Blanco, Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb

So much of this stack will depend on how the lineup looks. A.J. Pollock is almost certainly out after his groin injury Sunday, and David Peralta be out as well after he left that same game with a tight right glute. My guess is Drury and Owings bat first and second, but both are hot enough that I would like them even if they are a bit lower in the order. Nick Ahmed is 8-for-18 over his last six games, and Gregor Blanco is a candidate to lead off after he did so on Saturday and went 2-for-5 on Sunday.

The heart of the order is obviously in play as well, especially at home against Zack Wheeler. Wheeler had exactly four walks and four strikeouts in each of his last two starts, but managed to escape with just one earned run both times. Sooner or later those baserunners will catch up to him.
