The weeks between the U.S. and British Opens can sometimes be pretty dead, but if the Travelers Championship was any indication, that will not be the case this year. Bubba Watson lost his lead on Saturday but regained it early Sunday and was able to pull out his eighth career victory in a playoff.
As it did for the Travelers Championship, fantasy success in the Greenbrier Classic this week will likely hedge on the fortunes of Bubba Watson. Last week in the comments I was able to convince a reader to play Bubba, and he rewarded us with the win. One of the reasons I considered Bubba the favorite was the lack of strong players at the top of the field. The next best players were Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed, and when you combined that with Bubba’s impressive history at the course, I felt he was definitely the favorite, and worth paying up for.
Bubba is probably the favorite again. Bubba is the top-ranked player in the Greenbrier Classic Field, at No. 3 in the world. J.B. Holmes is the next-closest at 13. Both players are long off the tee—if a bit wild—and are capable of making birdies in bunches. Both players have been pretty good at The Old White TPC, but neither has a top-15 finish there.
I feel Holmes is the better value, but I am leaning towards making one GPP lineup that includes Watson. There are enough cheap guys I like to make a Watson centric lineup feasible, and Watson has a good enough chance to win to make it worth using him once. I’m probably staying away in cash games, however.
