If you were creating the recipe for the perfect golf tournament for DFS, what would it look like? It would definitely have the best players in the world. I like rooting on Cameron Tringale and Justin Thomas as much as the next guy, but there is no doubt there is a lot more juice when Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods tee it up.

You would want the best players to be playing well going in, too. It is a lot more tempting to pay full price for guys like McIlroy, Spieth, Justin Rose and Jim Furyk considering they have all won within the last month.

Any recipe for the perfect PGA DFS game would have to include some reasonably-priced high-risk/high-reward plays as well. Putting guys like Patrick Reed, Martin Kaymer and J.B. Holmes in your lineup is always equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. Unfortunately, those players oftentimes cost so much the risk outweighs the reward.

You would want to throw in a full field because fields with only 30 players are boring. As a finishing touch, throw in an iconic golf course and put a lot of money on the line, and you have the perfect PGA DFS tournament. The PLAYERS Championship this week combines all of those elements, and it should make for a great golf tournament. If you are one of those DFS players who ventures into PGA games only sporadically, I highly recommend you play this week.  I certainly enjoyed the challenge of trying to identify the top DFS plays for the PLAYERS Championship.

As I mentioned at the top, many of the top players in the world are playing very well heading into the PLAYERS Championship. For that reason, I am avoiding Rory, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson this week. The problem is there really isn’t a compelling reason to like any of those four over the others. I also feel there is little distinction between those four and the next tier of Jim Furyk, Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar. I’ll probably feel dumb when Rory beats Spieth in a playoff on Sunday, but I would rather play Jason Day and Jim Furyk together than have to pair Rory with some guy who probably has no shot at winning the tournament.

This should also be a great GPP week. This could easily be the cheapest Patrick Reed, Steve Stricker, Tiger Woods, J.B. Holmes and Rickie Fowler cost all season. Any one of those guys is capable of putting together a huge week, and with Reed the risk isn’t even that great. Dustin Johnson is a good—albeit more expensive—GPP play as well.

Leads the field with 97.6 FPPG this season. Worst finish this season was T31.

Patrick Reed

Great GPP play. Like defending champ Kaymer, Reed is as good as anyone when he is on.

Steve Stricker

7,800

Returned from a long layoff to finish 38th at The Masters. Finished T13 at The PLAYERS in 2014 and T12 in 2011.

Jimmy Walker

He is an elite player even if he isn’t priced like one. Tied for fifth at the PLAYERS last season.

Marc Leishman

7,000

Made the cut in three straight PLAYERS Championships, including T8 in 2013.

Tiger Woods

8,900

Looked good for three days at the Masters and won the PLAYERS in 2013. This may be your last chance to play him at a discount. Good GPP Play.

Rickie Fowler

8,500

Tied for 12th at the Masters and made it out of the group round last week at the Match Play.

Graeme McDowell

6,300

This is a ridiculously low price for the No. 35 player in the world.
