The 2016 Futures Game was a success over All-Star weekend. Boston’s top prospect, Yoan Moncada, took home MVP honors after hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the World Team a 4-3 lead. The World Team tacked on seven runs in the top of the ninth, giving them an 11-3 victory. Moncada has been talked about at length in this column and Sunday’s Futures Game was just another example of his brilliance. He has a sky-high ceiling and all of the tools to be a dominant fantasy sports for well over a decade.

Other highlights from the 2016 Futures Game…

Eloy Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Expect him to receive a promotion to Double-A before season's end…

Alex Reyes started Sunday’s game for the World Team and pitched 1.2 innings, striking out every batter he faced. He also touched 100 MPH on the radar gun consistently…

To no one’s surprise Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with a triple…

Joe Musgrove started the game and pitched a clean first inning. I wrote about him last week.

Trade Market Heating Up

The trade market is officially heating up and Thursday’s deal between the Red Sox and Padres is proof of that. While it is normal for prospects to be involved in deadline deals, oftentimes they don’t have the type of pedigree like Anderson Espinoza. The 18-year-old right-hander has made 17 starts at Single-A Greenville and owns a 4.38 ERA with a solid 8.5 K/9. Espinoza has a very high ceiling and San Diego has to be thrilled that they were able to land him. It goes without saying that Espinoza should be rostered in all dynasty formats even though he’s roughly two years away from the majors. He’s a very raw pitcher, but the upside is immense. Espinoza is immediately the top prospect in the Padres organization.

Second-Half Call-Ups

So, who are we going to see in the second-half of the season? We have already seen a major influx of prospects this season, but there are more players coming down the pike.

Alex Bregman, Astros

I have written so much about this guy, that if I praise him any more, you’ll think I’m on his payroll. The Astros have balked at the idea of bringing Bregman up immediately following the All-Star break, but two more solid weeks at Triple-A could change that. Bregman is batting .389 with five homers over his first eight games with Fresno, though he’s yet to play at third base. He’s not going to be called up before he gets action at the hot corner, but I do believe he will receive a promotion during the month of August.

David Dahl, Rockies

At this point, Dahl is probably itching to get to Coors Field given the way he has been hitting at Triple-A Albuquerque. Keep in mind, the PCL is a hitter-friendly league, but Coors Field is also a hitter-friendly home ballpark. Dahl only has seven games under his belt with the Isotopes, but he’s already clubbed four home runs. If he continues his hot hitting, a September call-up is certainly in the cards. Stash him away in NL-Only leagues.

J.P. Crawford, Phillies

A top prospect in the Phillies’ system, Crawford has just over 200 plate appearances at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is in the same camp as David Dahl, where his call-up will likely happen in September. Neither Colorado nor Philadelphia is going to make the playoffs this season, so starting Dahl or Crawford’s clock would be unwise. Crawford has been compared to a young Derek Jeter in the past, but those would be enormous shoes to fill. He can be stashed away in NL-Only leagues.

Alex Reyes, Cardinals

Reyes was mentioned near the top of this column for his excellent performance in the 2016 Futures Game. The young righty is a flamethrower and can consistently hit 100 MPH on the gun. Even if the Cardinals don’t bring him up to start, Reyes could be a valuable commodity in the bullpen. If you play in a deeper league and need strikeouts, Reyes could help you down the stretch.

Carson Fulmer, White Sox

In news that just broke on Friday morning, the White Sox are promoting Fulmer to the big leagues. This is somewhat of a surprise as Fulmer hasn’t been overly impressive at Double-A Birmingham. Fulmer has especially struggled with free passes this season, giving up 51 walks in 87 innings pitched. It’s likely that Fulmer will pitch out of the bullpen initially. If you remember, Chicago did the same thing with both Chris Sale and Carlos Rodon.
