This will be an abbreviated version of the Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report as I am getting ready to head to Boston bright and early to make my first venture into Fenway Park. Today I will take a look at a couple of top prospects at the Triple-A level and give an early season update on their performances. There will be no Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report on Sunday, but on Monday I’ll break down several Single-A arms that you should be watching in dynasty leagues.

Josh Bell, Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh)

The Pirates first baseman of the future is getting off to a great start at Indianapolis. He is currently slashing .281/.395/.516 with three homers and 15 RBI and won the International League Player of the Week last week. What’s even more encouraging is his walk-to-strikeout ratio of 12:13. The jury is still out as to whether Bell will developed 20 home run power, but even if he doesn’t, his excellent plate discipline will make up for it. Bell will be in Pittsburgh this season without question. Expect to see him sometime following the Super Two deadline in June.

Sean Manaea, Nashville Sounds (Oakland)

Manaea is one of the top prospects in the A’s organization and he won himself a promotion on Tuesday due to his positive results so far this year. He was drafted by Kansas City as the 34th overall pick in 2013, was dealt to Oakland in the 2015 Ben Zobrist trade and has since moved quickly through their system. Manaea has posted a K/9 of 10.1 or higher at every single level in the minor leagues and is continuing that success this year. Not only does Manaea strikeout plenty of hitters, but his strikeout-to-walk ratio is 5.25. He should fair well pitching at the Coliseum should be owned in 12-team mixed leagues and deeper.

Gary Sanchez, Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders

If you feel like you’ve heard the name Gary Sanchez for a long time, it’s because you have. Sanchez has been on several Top 100 Prospect Reports for five straight years, though he’s never really had an elite bat. This season he is off to a slow start, batting just .233 with two home runs and 10 RBI. While there is little doubt that he will heat up and raise that batting average, he projects to be a .260 hitter in the big leagues. The question is whether he will develop 20-25 home run power. The Yankees don’t really have a spot for Sanchez at this time, but if Brian McCann were to go down with an injury, Sanchez would get the call promptly. He’s worth a stash in AL-Only leagues.

Michael Fulmer, Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit)

The Tigers have announced that they are bringing Fulmer up to make a start on Friday against the Twins. While his 4.11 ERA at Triple-A looks rather unimpressive, don’t let the ERA stat fool you. Fulmer has struck out well over a batter per inning (11.7 K/9) and has a very pedestrian 2.9 BB/9. His success at the big league level may not come immediately, but he still deserves a roster spot in AL-Only leagues. The 23-year-old Fulmer was the centerpiece of the deal that sent Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets last July, so Detroit is certainly expecting big things down the line. With that said, Fulmer has only made three starts at Triple-A, so there is no guarantee he will stick at the big league level.

Recent Call-ups

Jose Berrios, Twins

There is no question that Berrios is one of the top prospects in all of baseball, especially on the pitching side. He made his major league debut for Minnesota on Tuesday night and gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four innings pitched. This wasn’t a stellar outing by any means, but nerves probably had a lot to do with that. Maybe—hopefully—a jumpy owner in your league dropped him already. If that’s the case, add him immediately. He should be owned in all leagues, as he should really settle in to be a serious fantasy asset this year.

Eddie Butler, Rockies

It’s truly a shame what Coors Field does to pitchers. Butler was a former top prospect, but he’s completely lost his mojo. He was recalled from Triple-A after Colorado placed Jorge de la Rosa on the disabled list, but he has absolutely no business being anywhere near your fantasy squad.
