If I asked you who leads the Dallas Cowboys in red zone targets on the year, who would you name? The answer is Jason Witten with 19. But for all of those targets, Witten has just one TD to show for them. Emmanuel Sanders has 17 red zone targets, good for 4th overall in the NFL but just 2 TD’s on the year. However, these are anomalies and it’s always advisable to roster and/or start players with high red zone target volume. That means that even players like Brandon Marshall (3 RZ TD’s over 17 targets) and Tyrell Williams (jut 1 RZ TD in 14 targets) must be continuously rolled out there in hopes that eventually their conversion rates start to catch up to their target volume.

Here’s the Red Zone recap:

TARGET MONSTERS:

Speaking of outliers, you can’t overreact to a sudden burst of productivity. Blowing FAAB chasing last week’s out of the blue big game is just plain “bad fantasy”. With that being said, I offer you Week’s 11’s red zone stars Jared Cook and Braxton Miller! The QB play of the Texans has been underwhelming in 2016 to put it mildly. It’s great that Braxton Miller had a nice showing Monday night for his dynasty league owners and all, but it would be fool’s gold to think his 3 catches on 5 targets for a TD are even remotely repeatable. It’s worth noting in deep leagues that his snap counts have surpassed Will Fuller, but in standard 12 team leagues he’s a bench WR at best.

Jared Cook had the same stat line as Miller (3 for 5 with a TD) and certainly has better QB play behind him. However, there are way too many other mouths to feed in Green Bay. It’s also worth noting that Aaron Rodgers has never utilized the TE in the Packers’ system on a consistent basis at any time in his career. Cook is clearly not season long worthy, and don’t get any DFS ideas about him either unless you enjoy losing money.

MOST EFFICIENCT:

With the Patriots short on bodies and playing the lowly 49ers, Danny Amendola caught both of his red zone targets and one for a score. Amendola is another infuriating offensive player in fantasy terms and can’t be trusted. The same can be said for Dorial Green-Beckham and Coby Fleener (both 2 for 2 with a TD last week). Jarvis Landry caught his lone red zone target for a TD and may be due for a slight upswing down the stretch. Landry has found himself on the bench of many standard league teams and with good reason, but he’s too talented not to see some increase after a horrid first half.

Dez Bryant was the most efficient of the week catching both of his red zone targets for TD’s. He’s had little problem finding chemistry with Dak Prescott and that certainly bodes well for his keeper value in 2017. With Stefon Diggs banged up, Kyle Rudolph scored a TD in his lobe red zone target. Look for that trend to carry over this week. Zach Ertz has carved out a nice role for himself in the Eagles’ controlled attack since his return and also caught his lone red zone look for a score. Ertz is the better TE down the stretch of the two if you’re in the market,

ONES TO WATCH:

Tyler Boyd would appear to have the inside track to fill some of the void that A.J. Green leaves behind. Boyd was 2 for 2 in the red zone with a TD and fits Green’s role in the offense much better than Brandon LaFell. Boyd is certainly worth adding in season long leagues and even has low end DFS appeal. Julian Edelman had 17 targets last week including 3 in the red zone. This week with Rob Gronkowski out again, Edelman is due for a big day versus the Jets and has carries higher than normal TD upside. While everyone runs to roster Odell Beckham this week in DFS against the Browns, I suggest giving Sterling Shepard a long look as an alternative. Not only is he clearly more cost effective, but his 2 for 3 with a TD last week and consistent play of late gives him a better floor than you may realize. Perhaps even comparable to Beckham, even if he lacks Odell’s high ceiling.
