Tom Brady returned and began his Revenge Tour 2016 on the NFL Sunday. The first recipient of this whopping stick was the Cleveland Browns. Of course it didn’t hurt that a heathy Rob Gronkowski was able to play 65 snaps Sunday (the most he’s seen this season). The “other” Patriots’ tight end Martellus Bennett, played 55 snaps (6/61/3TD’s) so clearly the two tight ends will be quite active going forward and there will be plenty of balls to go around. Regulation, fully inflated, balls!

Here’s the Snap Count Recap for Week 5:

RUNNING BACKS

The Steelers have wasted no time getting Le’Veon Bell back to full steam. His league high 73 snaps speaks volume about his value to that offense. Bell’s dual excellence in the run and pass game makes him a fantasy juggernaut in terms of volume and production. DeMarco Murray also continued to be a workhorse with 27 carries on 60 snaps for 121 yards. Unfortunately, Murray didn’t see the end zone Sunday, but he’s still #2 overall in snaps played for running backs (266) on the season.

On the downside, Melvin Gordon continues to not only be inefficient, but is also turning the ball over despite steady snaps (46). His overall line is still good enough to perhaps move him in a trade to another owner before the bottom drops out altogether. C.J. Anderson saw his snaps reduced to 36 (with just 11 carries for 41 yards). Meanwhile, Devontae Booker’s increased to 29 from 18 the previous week. It’s only a matter of time before this becomes an even split in Denver, if not the Booker show.

The surprise of Week 5 was third string Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ back Jacquizz Rodgers who played 38 snaps and saw a yeoman’s workload of 30 carries for 101 yards. He’s on a bye this week so he may be slightly cheaper on your waiver wire. The other recent waiver wire darling contributing big things is the Bears’ Jordan Howard. Howard played 63 snaps Sunday and carried the ball just 16 times. The good news is that he averaged over 7 YPC, and totaled 118 on the day. The real efficiency star is in Dallas. Ezekiel Elliott played 45 snaps and rushed for 134 yards on just 15 carries. Elliott is looking like a superstar right now.

WIDE RECEIVERS

The leader in snaps played for wide receivers in Week 5 was Jeremy Kerley. His 78 snaps resulted in 13 targets, 8 catches, 102 yards and a TD. Now that the 49ers have officially changed QB’s, we’ll see if Colin Kaepernick can continue to feed Kerley with the same massive totals. The likelihood I’d say is quite good considering the lack of weapons they possess on offense. Kerely’s counterpart, Torrey Smith, played 74 snaps which resulted in 1 target and zero catches just to give you perspective.

You should also take notice of the “feel good story” Adam Thielen of the Vikings. With Stefon Diggs out, Thielen stepped in and played 68 snaps, caught 7 of his 8 targets for 127 yards and found the end zone once. Cameron Meredith of the Bears also made a splash Sunday. His 63 snaps resulted in 12 targets, 9 catches, 130 yards and a TD. Meredith and Brian Hoyer seemed to have a nice chemistry making him a viable DFS value in Week 6 versus the Jaguars.

Sammie Coats may not be the best route runner, but against the Jets he just needed to run past the secondary. He played just 44 snaps, but was targeted 11 times for a 6/139 line with 2 TD’s. Coats has another cushy matchup against Miami this week, but be careful, this may very well be his best performance of 2016. He could even be a remarkable sell high candidate.

TIGHT ENDS

Greg Olsen had himself a career day with 181 yards receiving on just 54 snaps. Now, he was targeted 13 times when he was on the field. Regardless if Cam Newton plays in Week 6, Olsen will be a major contributor. Jesse James played 72 snaps and was targeted 8 times. James’ 6 catches for 43 yards and a TD, make him a strong play in season long and daily formats the ROS. Jordan Reed is seeing the opportunity (60 snaps, 11 targets, 8 catches), but he’s still having trouble matching last year’s breakout campaign.  Dennis Pitta (54 snaps), Gary Barnidge (61) and Kyle Rudolph (68) all say plenty of opportunity, but they too failed to convert that into substantial production. Delanie Walker was coddled a bit with his injury last Sunday. He still managed to play 43 snaps, catch 5 of his 8 targets for 66 yards and haul in a TD. Expect Walker to have a big Week 6 against the Browns after another week of getting closer to 100% healthy.
