Week 4 saw some of the worst secondary play I’ve witnessed in ages. So many DB’s trying to be the hero instead of doing their job. The results were lots of big plays and huge offensive totals for some fantasy stars. It seemed like everyone was doing a TD dance last weekend, but here’s the nitty, gritty, down and dirty of who was getting it done in the red zone!

TARGET MONSTERS:

Four players saw 4 targets in the red zone and two of them were tight ends. Jordan Reed made the most of his chances, hauling in all 4 for 2 TD’s. A great sign moving forward for Reed owners after a slow start to the season for him. The other TE who was busy inside the 20 was Greg Olsen who caught two of his red zone looks and one of which for a score.

The league leader in red zone targets YTD in 2016 is a Broncos wide out, but not the big bodied obvious choice. Emmanuel Sanders leads the NFL with 10 red zone targets. Now, he’s only caught 50% of them and just 2 TD’s, which is clearly the bad news. The good news is that this steady diet of opportunity bodes well for his upside on a weekly basis. That’s something to remember when fielding your DFS lineups. Now, he needs Trevor Siemian to get back on the field as soon as possible to maintain that trend. Tyrell Williams (8) and Allen Robinson (8) are climbing up the leader board as well!

MOST EFFICIENCT:

Derek Carr is emerging as a legitimate star in this league and Michael Crabtree has delivered stability to his passing game. On Sunday, Crabtree caught both of his red zone targets for TD’s. Zack Miller of the Bears continued to find a connection with Brian Hoyer and caught his 3rd TD in 2 games. We’ll see if Jay Cutler is healthy if that job goes right back to him. Early signs say that’s not a sure thing. The Browns Terrelle Pryor also proved he’s no one week wonder going 2 for 2 in the red zone with a TD.

On the year, A.J. Green is a perfect 5 for 5 in the red zone with one TD. Expect that TD total to grow in the weeks ahead. But even more dazzling has been Kelvin Benjamin and his perfect 4 for 4 with 4 TD’s! Even with Cam Newton questionable with a concussion this week, Benjamin is a must start in all formats at all times. Should Derek Anderson start the next game, Benjamin’s low ownership in GPP’s could be a huge opportunity for gains.

ONES TO WATCH:

Tyreek Hill of the Kansas City Chiefs is getting more opportunities every week. Sunday in a blowout, his 2 for 2 in the red zone with a TD will be inevitably lost in the shuffle. If he’s on your waiver wire, take some FAAB and spend on a young WR with upside who seems to be improving every week.

The Vikings continue to utilize Kyle Rudolph in the red zone and he caught another TD Monday night. Corey Brown was a perfect 2 for 2 in the red zone with a TD and may be an option in deep leagues moving forward. With a bye for Seattle Week 5, C.J. Spiller will be cheap on the waiver wire and like Brown in deeper leagues, could be a flyer after his 1 of 2 in the red zone with a TD. Especially if you’re a Christine Michael owner.
