Scouting Report

Bogaerts has a tall, thin frame and demonstrates great natural athleticism. Being in his presence for 15 minutes will make you realize that he was born to be an athlete. Bogaerts isn’t physically imposing but is has great power due to great fundamental mechanics. He uses his legs and hips well to generate power in his easy right handed swing. The ball jumps off of his bat with authority even on pitches out of his zone. Despite his success in the minor leagues, Bogaerts remains a rather raw prospect. Much of his ability is inherent which leads to the obvious question of what happens once those skills alone aren’t good enough. In many ways it is good to see a young player struggle in the minor leagues in order to see what he is made of and how he responds. Bogaerts hasn’t really had those issues yet but will certainly experience them in Boston. His future is likely at 3B as he is a slightly above average fielder now but as he matures will lose some of his range at SS.

2014 Analysis

It is highly expected that Bogaerts breaks spring training as the Red Sox starting shortstop. The club failed to resign Stephen Drew and traded slick fielding SS Julio Iglesias to Detroit at the end of last season. There is also a chance that Bogaerts moves over to third base if Will Middlebrooks can’t make more contact. Unlike most middle infielders, Bogaerts has 20 HR potential and won’t be very impactful on the basepaths. He is a great Fantasy option if you decide to go with speed in the outfield early on in your draft and are looking for some power upside. Because of his age and inexperience Bogaerts is no sure thing to remain in Boston all season. He’ll get an extended look and every chance to make the club but they will not sacrifice his future by crushing his confidence on a daily basis.
