Draft Guide: DFS Cash Games

By Jeff Mans

No matter what you do, don’t ever forget that daily fantasy sports (DFS) is just a game. As with any game, the goal is to acquire as much power as possible. In the game Monopoly, you want property. In chess, you want control of the center of the board. In poker, you want as many chips as possible. In each of these examples, the more you have, the more power you wield in ultimately achieving your goal and winning the game. The game of DFS is no different.

What we want to accumulate in DFS is, quite obviously, money. The larger our bankroll is, the more lineups we can build, the more entries we can submit, the higher limits we can play, the less opponents we have to face and ultimately the more risk we can handle. But, chances are that those of you reading this are not named Trump, nor are you a part of the Kardashian clan.

If you are like me, you simply cannot empty your savings account directly into your DFS bankroll. I have a wife, three kids and more monthly expenses than I want to talk about. I started out playing DFS with $50 about five years ago. I lost it. I deposited another $50 and lost it as well. In all, I probably deposited $900 over the course of four years before I started playing solely with the house’s money.

I wish that I had somebody to tell me back then what the right ways were to properly build a bankroll and just how important that would be going forward. So that is what I hope to do for each of you now. I’m going to take you through the proper steps of building a bankroll playing daily fantasy football.

So how do we build a bankroll playing DFS? You do this by playing and winning cash games. Remember that when we say “cash games” we are referring to 50/50 contests known also as double ups and/or head to head contests. As I mentioned earlier in this guide, I highly recommend avoiding head to head contests while you are a new player. I also suggest playing in the larger field double ups whenever possible.

Let’s get to the fun stuff
