Speaking The Truth
I'm just going for it today. Fantasy baseball. Bashing losers. Holding up heroes. Yeah, I ate my Wheaties this morning.
Yoenis Cespedes is the new Troy Tulowitzki, a supremely talented guy that just can't stay on the field. Currently dealing with some shoulder woes, Cespedes has appeared in 127 of the Athletics 150 games this year. Through two seasons he's appeared in a mere 82 percent of games for the team from Oakland.
Ubaldo Jimenez has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in the second half. Yes, I just typed that. It's accurate as well. Over 64 innings Ubaldo has a 1.83 ERA, 71 strikeouts, a 1.19 WHIP an is holding batters to an OBP below .300. For my $1 bid in AL LABR this year I've gotten a 12-9 record, 3.49 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 9.13 K/9 mark. I'll take that.
Kudos to Scott Kazmir. He's somehow lasted 145 innings this season. At the same time an 8-9 record, 4.34 ERA and 1.35 WHIP mark him as a below replacement level arm.
Am I the only one who eats at his keyboard sometimes? OK, I actually do it every day, so flipping busy at times. I ask cause I dropped some crumbs from my cornbread this morning onto it, and they snuck past the goalie – the back key – and have now taken up residence inside my keyboard.
Cliff Lee dominated Monday night. He became the first pitcher in baseball history to strike out 14 batters while producing at least three hits and four RBIs as a batter. Lee is rocking a 14-6 record, 2.95 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 201 Ks. Dude is a horse.
In his last 14 starts Wily Peralta has a 3.02 ERA. Just saying.
Rick Porcello allowed one run while striking out 10 against the Mariners Monday. Sure he's 13-8, and he's had some nice runs of success this season, but the 4.45 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 6.96 K/9 rate do nothing for me.
Trevor Rosenthal allowed three runs last night but the guy has been nails this season as the perfect late round add. The 23 year old has that 2.70 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, a 4.95 K/BB ratio and that massive 12.73 K/9 rate. He could be an elite closer next season if the Cards don't bring back Edward Mujica. Speaking of Edward, is he the best waiver-wire add of the year? Not only does he have 36 saves but that 2.19 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 14.67 K/BB ratio are insanely good. The guy has walked three batters in 61.2 innings this season folks.
James Shields has been exactly as advertised for the Royals. He's up to 213.2 innings on the season, has struck out 184 batters and posted strong ratios (3.33 ERA, 1.27 WHIP). He's only 12-9 though as he just hasn't gotten the offensive support he deserved.
Who leads baseball in saves the last 30 days? Probably wouldn't have guessed Rafael Soriano (10) would you? Three others have nine – Mark Melancon, Greg Holland and Craig Kimbrel. Holland has a 0.75 ERA while Kimbrel is sporting a 0.79 mark by the way. Right there with them is Ernesto Frieri who has eight saves an a 0.71 ERA.
So much for LASIK surgery curing Dan Uggla's problems. He's got four hits in 35 at-bats since he returned to action.
Jayson Werth is 4th in the NL in average (.322), 5th in OBP (.398) and 4th in SLG (.536). That gives him an OPS of .933 which just so happens to be the 2nd best mark in the NL (Paul Goldschmidt at .951). Superstar anyone?
C.J. Wilson is up to 17 victories, a career best, and he's also punched out 170 batters for a 4th straight year. With nine more innings he'll reach 200 for a 4th straight season as well. He's not elite, but boy is he solid.
