Second Half Stragglers
Yesterday I wrote about surging second half players. The yin to that yang, the darkness to that light, are those players who are gasping for air in the second half. Here are some of those players.
SECOND HALF NUMBERS
Here are some players you might hesitate to employ in the final month of the 2013 baseball season.
Gordon Beckham was hot there for a while. Not surprisingly it was a short while. In 139 second half at-bats he's hit .223 with two homers, eight RBIs and zero steals.
Starlin Castro is still floundering with a .238 average, two homers, one steals, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored in 45 games. Immense talent, zero maturity or focus.
Dexter Fowler has fallen on his face. Not only is his knee hampering him but he's just not performing when on the field. Over his last 37 contests he's batting .213, he has only two homers, and though he's stolen five bags he's been caught six times.
Nick Franklin has the worst average in the game for a full time player in the second half at .167. At least he has six homers and 22 RBIs.
Gio Gonzalez won his 9th game Tuesday but he's still been terrible in the second half (4.59 ERA, 1.61 WHIP).
Jedd Gyorko started strong for the Padres but since he was hurt he hasn't looked like the same hitter. Gyorko does have an impressive eight homers in just 150 at-bats but today we're more closely focused on the 11 runs scored and .200 second half batting average. The guy has scored three times in 38 games when he hasn't hit a homer.
We all know that Adam LaRoche is a second half player. Well, not so much. Through 41 games this season he has a mere 13 RBIs while batting .199. Be very careful with using first/second half splits when judging players. As I've detailed on many occasions, the All-Star game is an arbitrary mid point and it's really a very poor way to break down players performance.
Anthony Rendon was supposed to be ready to hit in the big leagues immediately. He did for a while, but recently, not so much. Rendon is batting .203 with two homers and no steals in the second half.
Anthony Rizzo has really lived up to that huge contract the Cubs gave him. He's batting .210 in the second half.
CC Sabathia has a 7.38 ERA in the second half to go along with a 1.71 WHIP. He's never pitched worse and he cannot be active in your lineup even though he's still owned in 91 percent of leagues at Fleaflicker.com.
Joe Saunders sucks, we all get it, but a 2.02 WHIP? How are the Mariners still allowing him to pitch?
Eric Stults has been a great play this season off the waiver-wire but since the Break he's got a 4.91 ERA, 1.57 WHIP an is striking out less than 5.7 batters per nine. He's even tough to start at Petco right now.
Yes again Mark Trumbo stinks in the second half. He's batting .213 in 42 games but 27 ribbies has given him a wee bit of value.
Adam Wainwright has been lit up the last two times he's taken the hill and he's sporting a 4.80 ERA since the break. Still he's striking out 8.55 batters per nine innings with a 4.07 K/BB ratio with a 1.28 WHIP. Let's just hope it's a couple of bad outings and not a sign that he's wearing down.
Jordan Zimmermann has a 5.48 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in the second half as he's walked 3.33 batters per nine innings while being beaten to death by the long ball (1.57 per nine). He's not looking anything like the elite hurler he was earlier in the year.
