By The Numbers: On The Go
Only have time for a short piece today. Getting ready to head out of town to host a fantasy football draft. Some quick thoughts from the world of baseball.
Miguel Cabrera, in the month of August, has 11 homers, 31 RBIs and 33 hits. In May he had 12 homers, 33 RBIs and 44 hits. The last 50 years the only other players to have two months of 10-30-30 in the same season are Albert Belle (1996 Indians) and Jim Rice (1978 Red Sox).
Players come and go, and Robinson Cano just get's it done. He's batting .305 with 24 homers, 85 RBIs, 68 runs scored and seven steals. Take a look folks. You're watching a HOFamer at the peak of his powers.
Dustin Pedroia is in a slump that has dragged his average down below .300. Wouldn't everyone wish they could be so lucky. Still he's fighting back as he's working on a 7-game hitting streak that has the career .302 hitter back on the cusp of .300 at .299.
Yasiel Puig has been great hitting .346 with 13 homers, 30 RBIs, 52 runs scored and seven steals in 74 games. That effort puts him on a 150 game pace of .346-26-60-104-14. Wow is right. Still, if you remove the average and think 26 homers, 60 RBIs, 104 runs and 14 steals, the line looks a lot different, doesn't it? Hard to believe he's still sporting that average with his .419 BABIP and that league average 19.3 percent line drive rate.
Jean Segura is batting .305 with 38 steals. Tremendous numbers given his draft day cost. He's also been a failure of late. Over his last 34 games since the All-Star break he's batting .250 with a .271 OBP and .610 OPS (compare to his first half numbers of .325, .363 and .849). Since the break he also has one homer, nine RBIs and 13 runs scored. Hell, he's got four homers over his last 74 games since the start of June. His ownership rate is down to 75 percent at Fleaflicker.com.
The last 30 days...
Zack Greinke is 5-0 with a 1.44 ERA. Jose Fernandez is 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA. Max Scherzer is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA. Bronson Arroyo is 4-1 with a 4.11 ERA. Martin Perez is 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA. Ricky Nolasco is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Jon Lester is 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA. Clayton Kershaw is 3-1 with a 0.71 ERA.
