It was a bit of a slow week on the free agent wire, seems like many took a bit of a break with the All-Star game festivities coming down the pipe. Make sense too cause it's such a short week of games.
TOUT WARS (15 team mixed): Aaron Harang, he of he on/off performance, was jettisoned so that I could bring into the fold Wily Peralta ($1). Why add Peralta? You may not have noticed, but the youngster is finally pitching like the potential star that the Brewers believe he is. Over his last four outings the Brewers youngster is 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 21 Ks over 26.1 innings. I like the sound of that an awful lot for one buck. No one, in any of these experts leagues you'll read about, went all in with Ziegler. He's a nice arm, but really, he doesn't have the stuff to be a closer. He has a 2.44 ERA and 1.04 WHIP, but his side winding ways have led to less than five strikeouts per nine innings as he relies on an AMAZING ground ball rate of 75 percent since the start of last season. That's a number that would make even Jim Johnson jealous. Notable bids: Jeremy Hefner ($8), Brad Ziegler ($5), Brett Wallace ($4), Chris Carpenter ($2), Carlos Martinez ($1), David Hernandez ($1), Andrew Bailey ($1)
LABR (12 team, AL-only): This league is tough to make moves in. If a player was drafted in the first 23 rounds, the only way you can remove him from your starting lineup is limited to three things – (1) can be placed on the DL, (2) can be placed on the reserve list if sent to the minors, (3) can be outright released. In addition, you cannot add players off waivers unless they go into your lineup immediately, they cannot be put on the bench, and you have to drop a player on your active roster to make the move. It makes movement pretty tough since the only way you can really add a player is to give up on one of your current fellas. Notable bids: Sonny Gray ($13), Brock Holt ($6), Brandon Workman ($4), Matt Tuiasosopo ($2), Yoervis Median ($1), Sean Doolittle ($1), Ross Wolf ($1), Neal Cotts ($1)
FSTA (13 team mixed): Luke Scott, I love me some Luke Scott (the cost was nothing as I disabled B.J. Upton). Scott is streaky as all get out, always has been, and right now he is surging. Hitting .329 the past three weeks, Scott is batting .405 with three homers and eight RBIs over his last 11 games. Notable bids: Wily Peralta ($46), Darin Ruf ($25), Brett Wallace ($13), Brad Ziegler ($12), Chris Denorfia ($10), Justin Smoak ($6), Edwin Jackson ($3)
SIRIUSXM EXPERTS (12 team mixed): Gordon Beckham was added at the cost of the perennially injured Neil Walker. He's hitting .335 over his last 44 games. Beckham has 14 hits in his last eight games, including six contests with two hits. He's a continual tease, just the way it is, but he's clearly locked in right now. On the hill the injured David Phelps went bye-bye as I added Andrew Cashner ($1) to the fold. There's an innings cap a coming, even if it's 150-160 innings he's got another 8-10 starts left. Over his last seven starts he's posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, chiefly cause he got bombed on July 5th (six earned runs in two innings). Notable bids: Felix Doubront ($4), Brett Wallace ($34), Adam Eaton ($2), Luke Scott ($1)
SIRIUSXM LISTENER LG (11 team mixed): This is the only league with an open waiver-wire. I dropped Yasmani Grandal cause of that jacked up knee and added in Josh Phegley. Hopefully his injured right hand is OK (looks like he should be good to go once games start up later this week). Also added Tommy Hunter. Jim Johnson continues to keep the 9th inning job in Baltimore, even though he's got six blown saves and seven loses (yikes).
K-BAD (12 team mixed): I stood pat this week, though I was able to activate Dexter Fowler from the DL. The Rockies' outfielder is hitting .284 with 10 homers, 13 steals and 51 runs scored in just 74 games this season. Notable bids: Wilson Ramos ($57), R.A. Dickey ($57), Andrew Bailey ($37), Brad Ziegler ($33), Tom Gorzelanny ($31), Wade Miley ($27), Marco Scutaro ($15), Felix Doubront ($15), Josh Phegley ($13), Corey Kluber ($13)
FANBALL (13 team mixed): Nothing to see here. Didn't make a move this week. With the shortened week coming, didn't see a great move to make on the hill. I was able to activate Dexter Fowler, though of course another player took his spot on the DL (B.J. Upton). Notable bids: Chris Carpenter ($1), John Mayberry Jr. ($1)
