The performance of Julio Jones this season got me to thinking. Look at his performances the last six weeks.

1 catch, 16 yards
12 catches, 300 yards
2 catches, 29 yards
7 catches, 139 yards
9 catches, 174 yards
3 catches, 29 yards

That’s three games with at least seven catches and 139 yards.
That’s three came with less than 30-yards.

Three times he’s been an outright superstar.
Three times he’s been soul crushingly bad.

Add it up in a traditional PPR league and he entered Week 9 as the #2 wideout in fantasy. Still, as the above numbers show, he basically crushed your soul in 50 percent of the last six games.

Let’s talk consistency.

Remember, we play in a H2H setup in fantasy football. Overall points don’t answer the question of who helps you most week-to-week. It doesn’t matter if you win a week by 22 points because Julio Jones went bonkers and produced a gazillion points. You only need to win by one point. What matters more is when he goes out and produced five points and you lose by five. That type of effort can cost you a “W”. Therefore, it should be obvious that week-to-week consistency actually matters a bit more than a player’s total points produced. Make sense?

Here’s what we will do moving forward.

1 – We will list the top-25 players at each of the four man positions (QB, RB, WR, TE) based on total points.

2 – Note that some players have had bye’s and some haven’t, so that will throw off the category rankings for some players.

3 – Take note of the “AVG” column which speaks to the average points produced per game by the player. We will use that as a baseline.

4 – We will note the number of times a player has been (A) Above his average, OR (B) Below his average. If a player “ties” his average, he is awarded that week as a “hit.”

GREEN: Reached “average” point total 6 times in 8 games.

YELLOW: Reached “average” point total 4 times in 8 games.

RED: Reached “average” point total less than 4 times in 8 games.

Here is the scoring system that we have used to generate the points you will see listed below.

Passing: 4 points for a touchdown. 2 points for 2-point conversion. 1 point for 25 passing yards. (-1) point for an interception.

Rushing: 6 points for a touchdown. 2 points for 2-point conversion. 1 point for 10 rushing yards. 1 point for a reception.

Receiving: 6 points for a touchdown. 2 points for 2-point conversion. 1 point for 10 receiving yards. 1 point for a reception.

* I will be leaving out the Week 9 Thursday night game since so few players participated in that contest.

TIGHT ENDS

*Rob Gronkowski is a special case because of his ill health. He returned and did nothing for two weeks (Week 3 and 4) and that hurts him. Since fully healthy, he’s been nails.
