ELITE OPTIONS

Drew Brees failed to match expectations in Week 2 but he still dropped back 46 times. Through two games he’s averaging 343 yards and 2.5 scores a game.

Andrew Luck needs to get the ball out fasters. Even with all his struggles last week he posted a 73.3 completion percentage on passes that he released in under 2.5 seconds. The mark was just 40 percent when he held it longer than 2.5.

Cam Newton struggled early in Week 2, but he threw for 353 yards and four scores. Just how it is.

Matt Ryan has thrown for a QB Rating of 121.4 through two games. An ATL quarterback has done that, through two games, only twice in Franchise history (Jeff George 1994 and Bob Berry 122.8). Ryan leads football in QB Rating and is second in passing yards (730) while throwing five scores and one pick.

Aaron Rodgers, woof. He may never have been worse than he was against the Vikings as he fumbled the ball three times (only lost one), he also threw a pick. He also hit just 5-of-14 passes that were in the air more than 10-yards as he continued to float passes. Through two games he’s completed 57.1 percent of his passes for a total of 412 yards.

Philip Rivers is without Kennan Allen and Danny Woodhead, but he adds Dexter McCluster (LOL). Rivers compensated for that in Week 2 with a lot of underneath and crossing route as he only attempted seven passes over 10-yards. He threw for four scores, but unless he can stretch the field a bit more success on that level is unlikely.

SOLID PLAYS

Ben Roethlisberger didn’t look good in Week 2. Maybe it was the rain. He also hit just 7-of-16 passes with a pick when under pressure. Still has six passing scores in two games and the Eagles shouldn’t be able to stop him.

Ryan Tannehill hit 20-of-21 passes at one point in Week 2 and he hit 30-of-32 passes in the game on throws of less than 10-yards. He was just 2-for-8 on passes of at least 20 yards. So goes it with Tannehill. Some things never change.

Eli Manning was the ballz down the middle in Week 2 as he hit 17-of-18 passes between the numbers. It’s not his fault that when he threw it outside guys dropped passes, just like Odell Beckham Jr. did on a pass that went right through his hands to blow a touchdown. ODB has to catch that pass. Goodness gracias, a high school kid has to catch that pass. Eli was only under pressure on six of 44 drop backs last week as the offensive line played great.

Carson Palmer had good numbers in Week 2, but again the eye ball test left me wanting as he made a series of poor decisions. He also was off on a number of throws that belie the 308 yards and three scores from Week 2.

Joe Flacco operated behind a strong o-line effort in Week 2. Still, he only posted a QB Rating of 83.3 on the 33 dropbacks when he didn’t face pressure. Flacco has to be better than that when given time. Still, he threw for 302 yards and two scores, with two picks, in the effort.

Russell Wilson didn’t look good in Week 2, that ankle really limited his mobility, and his o-line looked terrible against the Rams. That’s one passing score through two games has his yards per attempt of 8.3 last season has dipped to a poor 6.6 this season. The Niners were torched last week by Newton.

Blake Bortles seems to routinely struggle early and then pile up points late. The 0-line played well allowing just nine pressures on 50 drop backs in Week 2. He’s still averaging 325 yards a game and won’t stop passing.

Matthew Stafford saw seven of his passes dropped in Week 2. His pick was a terrible one as he simply totally missed the defender who broke off coverage to grab the pass. Still, he’s averaged 40 pass attempts, 300 yards, and two scores per game.

Dak Prescott has thrown more passes in his first two games than any quarterback ever (75). He was 22-for-30 in his second game as he yet again avoided making mistakes. He has one rushing score but none through the air in two games.

Marcus Mariota was pressured on eight of 38 drop backs in Week 2. Mariota faces a Raiders team that is allowing 404 yards a game and one that has permitted seven scores.

RISKY PLAYS

Jameis Winston was a letdown in Week 2. Check out this Daily Dive video. Winston hit just five of 15 passes for 42 yards when under pressure last week as his game fell apart.

Brock Osweiler threw two picks in Week 2, neither really appeared to be his fault, and both Will Fuller and DeAndre Hopkins went over 100-yards. Part of the reason for the success was the strong line play as he was pressured on just six dropbacks.

QUARTERBACKS TO AVOID

Jay Cutler (hand) will not play this week. Ditto Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder). We think at least.

Alex Smith completed 15-of-21 passes that were thrown under 10-yards last week for 95 yards. On passes over 10-yards he completed just 5-of-15 for 91 yards. So goes like with Smith who also failed to toss a touchdown a week after his huge first effort this season.

Trevor Siemian handled the pressure really well in Week 2 with an 11-for-16 line with 175 yards. However, he is still struggling at some aspects of the game and takes on a Bengals team that is holding passers to 219 yards and a 52.8 percent completion percentage.

Blaine Gabbert threw for two scores and ran for another in the Niners loss to the Panthers. He completed barely 47 percent of his passes though, was picked off twice, and was erratic on short yardage chucks, something he cannot do given his skill set. The o-line has been impressive while Gabbert has not.
