In The Trenches: Numbers to Know, Week 3 – 2015

Since 1990 teams that have started 2-0 have made the playoffs 63 percent of the time. If a team is 1-1 they have made the playoffs 41 percent of the time. If you start 0-2 and you got no chance at 12 percent.

Giovani Bernard, Carlos Hyde and DeAngelo Williams lead the NFL with seven runs of 10-yards.

Sam Bradford isn’t getting much help on offense but he’s also not doing much on his own either. On 12 passes of more than 10-yards last week he completed two of them.

Tom Brady joined Peyton Manning as the second quarterback to ever thrown for 750-yards, seven scores and no picks through two games.

Tom Brady leads all quarterbacks with 63 completions on the year. The following starters haven’t thrown that many passes: Andy Dalton, Nick Foles, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kirk Cousins, Carson Palmer, Aarons Rodgers and on…

Teddy Bridgewater actually acquitted himself pretty well against the blitz. On 10 blitzes last week he completed seven passes for 99 yards.

John Brown has 18 career games. He has gone for 70-yards twice. He has never had more than five receptions in a game.

Talk about a game manager. Kirk Cousins only threw 27 passes in Week 2 but only five of them went for more than 10-yards. Roughly 45 percent of his passing yards were in the air (91 yards) while the majority were picked up after the catch (112 yards).

Julian Edelman and Jamaal Charles lead all players with three receptions inside the 10-yard line.

Nick Foles was a mess when under pressure last week. He completed just two of 11 passes for 12 yards.

Ted Ginn Jr. leads the NFL with four dropped passes.

Don’t give up on Melvin Gordon yet. He forced three missed tackles in Week 2, and he also averaged a strong 3.6 yards per run after contact.

Mark Ingram leads all NFL players with 142 yards after the catch. The leader at the wide receiver spot is Julio Jones at 120.

James Jones has scored three times for the Packers. He had three touchdowns in 14 games with the Packers in 2013. Be careful.

Colin Kaepernick threw for a touchdown in Week 2 in the 4th quarter of the Niners game. That was the first time in 22 starts that he threw a score in the final quarter. That’s embarrassing. Colin K. also completed 27 of 32 passes when he was not blitzed leading to a 126.8 QB Rating on such plays.

Andrew Luck has thrown five picks this season. Aaron Rodgers threw five last season.

Marshawn Lynch broke five tackles on 15 carries last week. He broke 14 tackles the last time he faced the Packers in the NFC Championship Game last year. He gained 34 of his 41 yards last week after contract. His struggles are not on him, but the blocking. Lynch has been “stuffed” nine times this season to lead the NFL.

Eli Manning threw for 292 yards and two scores in Week 2. He was bonkers good on the short stuff completing 24 of 27 passes.

Marcus Mariota produced 179 of his 257 yards last week when he wasn’t under pressure. When he was under pressure he only completed four of 12 passes.

I don’t know if it means anything or not, it probably doesn’t, but Darren McFadden touched the ball on nine of the last 12 carries for the Cowboys, not Joseph Randle.

DeMarco Murray is on pace for 88 rushing yards. He ran for that many yards in 12 of 16 outings last season. Murray has been hit behind the line of scrimmage on 10 of his 21 carries this season. Moreover, the average of the first hit from a defender last year was 2.8 yards past the line of scrimmage. This year that number is 0.1 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Murray may or may not play this week cause of his hamstring injury.

Carson Palmer was money last week on moderate passes. He threw six passes between 10-19 yards and he completed all six for 84 yards and a score.

Allen Robinson and Steve Smith Sr. both have been targeted on 11 passes they have been unable to catch, more than anyone in baseball.

Matt Ryan didn’t throw a pass over 20-yards other than the one pass to Jones. He was 8-for-9 over intermediary routes though.

Matthew Stafford is all kinds of beat up through two weeks. When under pressure in Week 2 against the Vikings he completed a mere seven of 20 passing attempts. He needs a set pocket or he is a struggling.

Tyrod Taylor was sacked eight times in Week 2.

DeAngelo Williams will return to being a caddy this week with the return of Le’Veon Bell for the Steelers. DWill had three rushing scores in Week 2, the first time he pulled off that trick since Week 16 of the 2008 season when he gouged the Giants for four scores.
