When playing season-long fantasy basketball, respect the elders of the game. Seasoned veterans should not be overlooked simply because of age. These players know their role in the league and know their limitations. Watch the waiver wire early for some of these players. There is no reason why Atlanta Hawks Forward-Center Elton Brand can rattle off multiple productive weeks in a row throughout the season. He blocked 1.2 shots per game and shot 53.9 percent from the field last season.

Don’t try to be an injury expert when it comes to these veterans, especially when analyzing fantasy trades throughout the season. If San Antonio Spurs Forward-Center Tim Duncan is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game by January, don’t assume that he is bound to get hurt. Tim Duncan has been one of the most consistent players in fantasy basketball for over a decade and should not be scrutinized because of age and the fact that he will be rested for a few games. He will still produce like a top big man in the majority of the games he plays in. Most top players get a couple of games of rest spread throughout the season. The Spurs simply get more attention because of it. Other players take games off for rest. Remember that!

Brooklyn Nets Forward-Center Kevin Garnett and Houston Rockets Guard Jason Terry are perfect examples of veterans that need to be watched early on in the season. Both did not make much of a fantasy impact last season and there is a good chance that one of these two will be on waiver wires to start the season. With Nets starting Center Brook Lopez (Foot) sidelined for the next few weeks, Garnett will need to provide more offense inside. Terry could secure playing time as one of the first guards off of the Rockets bench.

Some veterans will show flashes of dominance for random stretches throughout the season. These are the players that send thoughts of “He still has it” and “I feel like it’s 2002 all over again” running through heads of fantasy basketball players and NBA fans in general. Spurs guard Manu Ginobili and Memphis Grizzlies Guard-Forward Vince Carter will go on scoring streaks and will show their shooting range. Don’t view Ginobili as just a random “throw-in” player in a trade. He can and will certainly produce and will score and grab rebounds and steals. Carter was a waiver wire favorite of fantasy basketball players last season. He scored 11.9 points per game last season and shot 39.4 percent from downtown last season

Playing time is crucial and while offenses are setting their rotation early on in the season. These veterans will be relied on to maintain balance in the lineup. Do not pass up on these players without looking at their full situation and their team’s depth chart. Respect your elders!
