DFS PGA PLAYBOOK - U.S. OPEN AT ERIN HILLS
Published: Jun 17, 2017
I love where my birthday falls on the sports calendar because it almost always lands during U.S. Open week. This year I get to watch the first round of the U.S. Open on my birthday and that’s an awesome way to celebrate. Let’s get right down to it …
The U.S. Open debuts a new course to the world, Erin Hills in Wisconsin. The fact that little to no one has played this track, makes it that much harder to put together a playbook. You are going to hear the word “fescue” a lot this week and with good reason because it is all over this course. It is thick, deep and nearly impossible to hit. While all the focus is on the rough and fescue, this Par 72 course stretches out 7,741 yards, yes that’s long. There is talk that the 18th hole could play up to 700 yards. The wind can really kick up and the bunkers scattered throughout the course look tough.
When you look over what I’ve told you about the course, the player targets should be ball strikers especially ones that can keep the ball on the fairway. We need players who can stripe a long iron with the length of these Par 5s. Players will need to bring their low shots to play under the wind at times, have good sand ability, and I’d like to see good proximity from the rough numbers as well. All the other standard stats should be taken into account as well, SG:TG, GIR, and Putting. We’ve obviously got no course history to work with at Erin Hills, so we will be relying on stats and recent form to help us select players for our lineups.
The weather will play a major factor for these players throughout the weekend in Wisconsin. I don’t see a real edge with tee times as Thursday looks to be alright with partly cloudy skies in the forecast but the storms roll in early Friday morning and don’t stop until early Sunday morning. There is no way for your players to completely avoid the rain on Friday. I would say though, if it is going to rain a lot, that will favor the bigger hitters as an already long course will play even longer.
The U.S. Open always bring high drama and it looks like there should be plenty of that over the weekend in Wisconsin. Let’s hope my playbook brings all of us luck …
