It is never easy to foresee the unforeseen. Injuries happen every day in the NHL and here at Fantasy Alarm, our goal will be to help you try to stay on top of those maladies. Counting all the latest bumps, bites, and bruises, there were 90 players held out of lineups. Six of those are long term injuries from a previous year. Those players are likely not to return or have retired. That leaves 84 who have been hurt this season. Here are some of the more notable ouches out there and their possible prognosis on this Black Friday.

Centers

Jonathan Toews is day-to-day with what is believed to either be an upper body and/or head injury. He was questionable for Friday afternoon’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. It really is a 50-50 decision as to whether he comes back Friday or misses some more time. The best thing to do is to wait and see what the beat writers will say later.

Mika Zibanejad is out at least 6-to-8 weeks due to a broken fibula suffered against the Florida Panthers. The way he slid into the boards feet first looked even worse than the resulting injury. One almost thinks ankle and or potential ligament tears and yet all signs indicate that this was a clean break. We will check his status in a few weeks to see how he is progressing.

Sean Couturier was added to our list due to a knee injury suffered against the Florida Panthers. It is almost as if there is a theme this week. The second line center will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks with what is being termed an MCL sprain. It was again feared that the pivot had torn something. This is bad short-term news but at least not the worst case scenario.

Wingers

Kyle Palmieri is ailing from an extremely sore shoulder. This may or may not be an AC joint type of injury which is typically a 10-to-14 day prognosis. At this point, it all depends on the pain tolerance level of the winger. The forward is questionable for tonight as well as for Saturday. Following beat writers on social media will be very important for the next 24-36 hours on this one. [Editor's Note: Recent reports list Palmieri as 'expected to play' for Friday.]

T.J. Oshie is still week to week with what is being termed a shoulder injury. There may be a partial dislocation err separation of the shoulder but that is pure speculation at this point. It just makes sense based on the prognosis. Keep an eye on how he progresses with his shot and his practice load. When he goes from non-contact to contact jersey, we will have a better idea on a timetable.

Chris Kunitz joins Patric Hornqvist on the injured reserve list with what is believed to be a lower body injury. Again, we have received the week to week prognosis for the forward. Also, the injury is not required to need surgery. That is a piece of very good news as well. It may be a groin issue or core issue but no one really knows. Let us see when he starts to skate first before a more concrete timeframe.

Defensemen

Zdeno Chara is day to day with an undisclosed injury. It is time to play the guessing game a little bit here. At least a little digging revealed a lower body issue for the defenseman. He will be out at least tonight against Calgary and potentially longer. It is clear that the Bruins defense misses him more than even if Patrice Bergeron was out. This will be one to monitor often.

Sami Vatanen is just simply out with an illness. He left the Islanders game early with what was believed to be some kind of flu like symptoms. Fortunately, the defenseman was able to take regular practice shifts on Thursday. This basically means he will be able to play this afternoon against Chicago. You can stick him into your lineup without hesitation.

Goalies

Eddie Lack will be out indefinitely with a concussion suffered earlier in the week during practice. He has been placed on injured reserve which means he will miss another few games at a minimum. Until the goalie is actually skating with contact and able to take shots without any setbacks, he should be the furthest thing from any fantasy minds. Besides, Cam Ward has been rather hot in net anyway.

Jonathan Quick still is at least weeks away from returning due to a groin injury suffered during the opening night of the regular season. He is six weeks out from this non-surgical method of rehab and strengthening. This is an extremely slow and tedious process but re-injury is not remotely likely at this point. Again, he will not be back for awhile but there is some progress.
