It’s playoff time in fantasy baseball, which is always a great time of the year. This is the time where all your hard work throughout the season has hopefully granted you a playoff spot. If your playoffs start in a few days, your team is back to 0-0 -- a fresh slate. This article features three guys who could possibly, scratch that, will help you gain a slight edge over your opponent in niche categories. It’s all about bold moves at this point of the season, but make sure the move is justified. Don’t add some Joe Random just because you’re looking to hit it big. Make sure you still do the research and make sure that player is in a position to succeed. Let’s get into this.

Yoan Moncada, 2B BOS— You know how in March Madness you just grace the No. 1 seeds to the next round? Well, that’s the equivalent to placing Moncada in this article. He has the potential to be a fantasy goldmine and there are scouts raving about how there’s nothing this can’t do well. In 106 minor league games—45 at Double-A and 61 Advanced-A—Moncada was hitting .294 with 15 home runs, 31 doubles, six triples and 45 stolen bases. His 124 strikeouts may be a tad high, but you can live with it when he walked 72 times in just 106 games. The kid is only 21 years old but he has the ability to produce right away for the already offensively-potent Boston Red Sox. I’ll be the first, and certainly not the last, to tell you that this kid could be the extra push that you desperately need down the stretch. However, as we’ve learned with some other highly-touted prospects, expectations may need to be tempered early on. Regardless, what this kid can provide is worth picking up right now. Look for him to get time at third base in Boston and provide in all five categories for you.

Brandon Finnegan, SP CIN— Finnegan’s 8-10 record, 4.19 ERA and 1.32 WHIP may not catch your eye, but his 7.39 K/9 is nothing to scoff about. At this point of the fantasy season, that is likely the best, or at least close to it, that you will find. Don’t get me wrong, this guy walks a ton of batters, which is going to hurt. His BB/9 of 4.19 is second highest in the league among qualified starters. The only guy worse than him is Toronto’s Francisco Liriano. On the other hand, Finnegan is in a nice little groove right now, in which he’s walked just seven batters over his last 25.1 innings pitched. While that still isn’t great by any means, it’s pretty damn good for him, considering his 4.19 BB/9 mark. Over his last four starts, spanning that 25.1 innings, he’s punched out 32 batters, but posted just a 1-2 record. With Finnegan on your team, you aren’t going to be getting many wins, but while he’s pitching well, he can be a huge boost to your strikeouts. As long as his slider (.210 BAA) and changeup (.092 BAA) are working, he’s worthy of a roster spot.

C.J. Cron, 1B LAA— Over the last seven days, Cron has been white hot. During that span, he’s hitting .464 (13-for-28), slugging .893 with three home runs, six runs scored, eight RBI and only three strikeouts. Sure, he hasn’t walked during that stretch, but his 5.4 BB% for the season signifies that he isn’t a frequent flyer to the base on balls department. Cron hit .203 in the opening month of the season, which is atrocious. However, he’s hit above .285 in every month since, so if he’s still available in your league, he’s worth an add. Cron is going to give you a home run or two here and there, but more importantly, he’s going to give you some cushion in terms of batting average. He’s hitting .290 on the season and is currently white hot. He’s going to be reliable for you at first base, so if you need someone to offset some average-drainers, Cron is your go-to guy.
