The Week That Was Football: The Injuries From Week 10

Big name injuries highlight this week’s Football Week That Was.

For 2014, The Week that Was: NFL will focus on injuries and their effects.

Carson Palmer:   According to reports, Carson Palmer suffered a torn ACL.  If true, that would be a terrible break for Palmer, the Cardinals and his fantasy owners.  Palmer was on fire before the injury having thrown 9 TD and only 2 INT in the 4 games before Sunday.  One real question is whether Drew Stanton can take over without skipping a beat.  Well, Stanton did look good in engineering the game winning score. However, his 1 TD in the three previous games in which he played does not bode well.  The other big question is how Stanton taking over will affect the Cardinals WR.  Well, Larry Fitzgerald was targeted 24 times in the three games Stanton played earlier this year so there shouldn’t be a big downgrade there.  As to Michael Floyd, there should be an uptick in value as Stanton looks his way far more than Palmer did.

Reggie Bush:  Reggie Bush got hurt again.  This time Reggie suffered an ankle injury early in first quarter and seemed limited in what he could do thereafter.  The bottom line here is that Joique Bell has pretty much established himself as the RB1 in Detroit.  That said, his Bell’s 61 and 81 total yards respectively in the last two weeks does not bode well.  It looks to me like the old gun slinging Matthew Stafford is back.  Upgrade Stafford and the WRs, downgrade the RBs in Detroit.

Giovani Bernard:    Giovani Bernard missed Thursday’s tilt with the Browns but no worries, none of his teammates showed up to play either.  It is unclear whether Gio will play next week against Jacksonville.  Not much really to say here other than whether or not Gio is a go next week, Jeremy Hill is a must start.  Either he is the feature back (great) or gets enough touches to still do damage against the hapless Jags.

Lamar MillerLamar Miller had only four carries for only 10 yards Sunday.  Miller was clearly limited this week and has a short turnaround and the tough Bills defense awaiting him next.  Bottom line, you have to have better options than Miller for week 11.  If you are in a very deep league (14 or more teams), Damien Williams could be a sneaky start for you next week.  Yes, the Bills are tough but Williams can both run and receive enough to provide value in those deep leagues.  Watch this situation as it develops.

Calvin Johnson: Calvin Johnson is Calvin Johnson again.  After basically being absent since week 3 with a stubborn high ankle sprain, Megatron dominated on Sunday hauling in seven catches on 15 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown.  If you kept the faith and held on to the all-world receiver, you deserve the spoils you got this week and should get the rest of the way.  Nicely done.

Rashad Jennings:  With Andre Williams showing he is just a straight ahead runner who is totally touchdown dependent in fantasy, the Giants and fantasy owners alike are hoping Rashad Jennings can recover sufficiently from his knee injury to play next week.  In the first three weeks of the season, Jennings put up 381 yards of total offense with two TD and 8 catches.  Williams simply cannot do what Jennings can do.  Watch the news carefully because if Jennings is a go, he must be in your lineup and Williams must be out.

Tony RomoYes, I am a cowboy fan and yes, I devote some time here in this column to my team but face it, Tony Romo’s back is going to determine a lot of fantasy football titles this year.  Two things I know for sure.  First, Tony Romo is as tough as they come.  Thus, you can count on him going out there if it is at all possible. That is huge in fantasy football.  Second, the Cowboys offense hits on all cylinders with Romo at the helm.  If you own Dez, Witten, or even Terrance Williams (despite his goose egg today), you can safely count on them if Romo continues to be able to suit up.  With a bye next week, things should be looking up as to Romo and his troops helping you in the fantasy playoffs – playoffs which are fast approaching.
