With so many wide receivers and so many nice match-ups, it can be awfully difficult to decide on which receivers to use. One thing that we are learning is that it’s okay to pay down for the position since there are so many outstanding options. I have found that using one elite wideout and paying down for the other two affords me the ability to pay up at QB and RB which seems to be the necessity these days. Here’s a look at some recommendations for NFL Week 4 and, of course, the data table to help support.
High-Priced Talent
Antonio Brown, PIT – He’s as consistent as they come and he transcends match-ups. While the Chiefs may be a badass defense, Big Ben will continuously find ways to get AB84 the ball.
DeAndre Hopkins, HOU – The Titans pass defense ranks 25th in the league and is allowing almost 95 yards per game to opposing WR1. Brock Osweiler will look to lean heavily on him after last week’s debacle.
Allen Robinson, JAC – Even when the Jaguars lose, you win with Robinson. The match-up with division rival Indy is going to be a favorable one, especially with them ranking23rd against opposing top wideouts and allowing an average of 97 yards per game to them this season.
Brandin Cooks, NO – Two stinkers in a row? No sir. The Chargers pass defense ranks 29th in the league against the WR1 and is giving up an average of 97 yards per game to them.
A.J. Green, CIN – Noone likes playing the Thursday games, but Green has one tasty match-up here with the Fins this week. Teams are averaging 11.1 targets per game to their top wideouts when facing them and Miami is giving up an average of 104 yards per game to the position.
Pricey but Affordable
Kelvin Benjamin, CAR – Seems unlikely that the Falcons will be able to contain Benjamin the way the Vikings did last week. They’re not giving up huge yardage numbers, but their pass defense doesn’t rank 31st in the league for nothing. Cam Newton is going to hit him and Greg Olsen all day.
Marvin Jones, DET – How do you not start Marvelous Marvin again? He’s the most heavily targeted receiver on the team and the Bears rank 28th in the league against the WR2 which is where Jones usually lines up. He may not hit 200 yards, but he’s going to hit.
T.Y. Hilton, IND – The Jags aren’t giving up a ton of yardage but they are giving up a lot of points. They rank 26th in the league against opposing top wideouts and it finally looked like he and Andrew Luck were on the same page.
Amari Cooper, OAK – This could be a tight game and the 46.5 O/U tells me that both teams are going to be taking their shots downfield to get the better of the other. The Ravens rank 24th in the league to opposing top receivers and are allowing an average of 26.1 points per game to the position in a ½ pt PPR format.
Terrelle Pryor, CLE – The jack of all trades for the Browns certainly deserves consideration for GPP play and a match-up with the Redskins might just be enough of a reason to use him. Josh Norman is suddenly a man alone on an island with all the injuries to the Skins’ secondary and he isn’t going to be shadowing Pryor out there. Washington currently ranks 28th in the league against opposing WR1 and are allowing an average of 116.3 yards per game to them.
Solid Value
Emmanuel Sanders, DEN – Super soft match-up against the Bucs this week and Trevor Siemian has shown that he will lean heavily on Sanders both between the 20s and inside the red zone. Tampa is giving up big points to opposing receivers and are allowing over 300 yards per game through the air.
DeSean Jackson, WAS – The Browns secondary is rough and ranks 27th in the league against opposing WR1. They’re giving up almost 92 yards per game to the position and with a spotty ground game, Kirk Cousins is going to have to throw as much as he can.
Mike Wallace, BAL – Oakland did a good job containing the Titans last week but Joe Flacco is no Marcus Mariota and Wallace certainly is no Tajae Sharpe. Look for the veteran Ravens to connect early and often, exposing the fact that the Raiders secondary gives up the most points per game to receivers than any other team.
Travis Benjamin, SD – We’re expecting yet another shootout with the Saints which means Philip Rivers will be looking for Benjamin quite a bit downfield. Don’t expect mind-blowing totals though as the Chargers will utilize the ground game early on. But as the game progresses and the Saints start to rack up points…look out!
DeVante Parker, MIA – The Bengals are going to be heavily focused on stopping Jarvis Landry which will undoubtedly leave Parker in some easy one-on-one match-ups. Cincy actually ranks 23rd in the league against opposing WR2 and are allowing almost 84 yards per game to them. Some might assume Kenny Stills, but he’s nowhere near as talented as Parker.
Bargain Basement
Ted Ginn, CAR – The Falcons pass defense is a mess and while Benjamin will get most of the looks, this has all the earmarks of a Ted Ginn deep touchdown catch and run. He’s going to be in a number of my GPP lineups this week.
Michael Thomas, NO – I’ll throw him into my GPP lineups if Willie Snead is out again. If that’s the case, I expect Thomas to fill in a similar role as he did this past week against Atlanta which means height match-ups in the end zone and some nice passes across the middle.
Cole Beasley, DAL – With Dez Bryant nursing a hairline fracture in his knee, Beasley is going to continue to be a target monster for Dak Prescott. We’d like to see him more in the red zone, but the volume he should see will soften the blow if he doesn’t do any end zone dancing.
Adam Humphries, TB – He’s emerged as a reliable favorite for Jameis Winston and while Mike Evans will see the bulk of the targets, Humphries is getting the attention over Vincent Jackson and his horrible catch rate. The Broncos are obviously a terrible match-up, but when Winston is chucking the ball around and playing catch-up, Humphries will be there for him.
Kevin White, CHI – With the Bears still limiting Alshon Jeffery due to the knee issues, White emerged as a target beast last week. That trend should continue this week and with him and Brian Hoyer working together on the field more, the two should sync up and give us more receptions and yards this time around.
