They say all good things must come to an end and thus my vacation and my time spent on Phish Summer Tour has come to a close. While that may sound like bad news for me, you folks get to reap the benefits as I am back on the call for the DFS Pitching Coach moving forward. Fear not, Jerry Colvin will still be around for the weekends, but I’ve got some lost time to make up for here and it starts with Thursday’s short slate. Games are starting early so for those who like to dabble in the full slate games, here we go….

Stephen Strasburg, WAS – Those of you who own Strasburg in seasonal leagues know that when he is as hot as he is right now – just three runs allowed over his last four starts (28.2 IP) – you have to ride him. The Dodgers have been swinging the sticks well lately, but their numbers against right-handed pitching are very much league average and with a 21.1-percent strikeout rate and a sub-.150 ISO on the road, they’re really not all that intimidating. Let me strap on my Captain Obvious cape and point out that Strasburg is easily a top cash game play.

Steven Wright, BOS – He faced these Twins back in late June and held them scoreless for 7.1 innings with six strikeouts. The Twins have a below-average .309 wOBA against righties this season, but even worse is their .247 wOBA and 25.8-percent strikeout rate over the past week.

Adam Wainwright, STL – He’s looked outstanding over his last three starts, having allowed just one earned run over 23 innings with a 19:5 K:BB over that span. Someone tried to tell me I couldn’t pick on the Padres, but we know that’s not true. Especially when they’ve posted just a .313 wOBA with a 26.5-percent strikeout rate over the past week. Remember, while they are capable of having a bust0out game every now and then, they’re still the same bunch that has posted a 29th-ranked .288 wOBA against righties this year. Yeah Don….they still suck!

Chris Tillman, BAL – The Yankees have been giving Baltimore some trouble recently, but they’re still only posting a .298 wOBA over the past week, so let’s not overlook that. They don’t strike out much so don’t expect a huge day for Tillman, but as a stable option on a two-pitcher site in a cash game, I’m looking at the three runs allowed over his last 21 innings (three starts). Again, nothing phenomenal, but someone who can offer you a decent quality start.

Sonny Gray, OAK – It can be a little nerve-wracking at times, but Gray seems to be getting a little more reliable recently. He’s got four quality starts in his last five outings, including a recent back-to-back set of starts against some decent opponents. He’s trimmed down the home runs and has really upped his ground ball rate as well. With the Rays posting a 24th-ranked .305 wOBA and 24.4-percent strikeout rate against righties this year, I like Gray’s chances of a third straight quality start.

Tom Koehler, MIA – OK, so we’re moving into GPP dart territory now, but fear not, Koehler looks like he could be worth the chance here. The Phillies are sitting on a .297 wOBA with a 21.5-percent strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this year and over the past week, they’ve been dead-last in the majors with a pathetic .227 wOBA and an awful 27.6-percent strikeout rate. With offensive numbers that offensive, even Koehler, who’s allowed just three earned runs in 14 innings against Philly this season, can’t screw this one up!

CC Sabathia, NYY – If you’re going to give Tillman a look in this one, you may as well, for the price-point, give CC a look here as a contrarian play in a cheap GPP. His numbers have been awful lately, but the Orioles’ offense, which already ranks 23rd in the league with a .312 wOBA against southpaws this season, has posted just a .236 wOBA over the last seven days. Their 21.6-percent strikeout rate should be enough to help CC rack up a half dozen K’s and their .114 ISO over that span isn’t exactly intimidating either. He’s held them scoreless over 12 innings (two starts) this year already, so given their recent struggles, he’s worth a shot.
