Here we are at the end of May already. Wow did that go quickly. Being two months into the season makes it a perfect time to check-in all-around the minors to see how some of the prospects I’ve broken down are doing thus far. Some of these guys will still be a year or more away but it’s worth revisiting them in the meantime.

Yoan Moncada (3B CWS AAA) has still been carrying a solid stick since the first week of the season. His .320/.400/.497 line is great with a .434 BABIP as well. His six homers, 10 steals, 32 runs, and 16 RBI belie his 28.0% K rate so far. Moncada will need to improve his eye at the dish before getting a shot

Jorge Alfaro (C PHI AAA) has kept hitting at a very good clip, though not the white-hot pace as before, and hasn’t let his AVG drop below .280 this season. The power hasn’t arrived yet with just three homers in 38 games and just a 1.8% BB rate combine show he isn’t ready just yet.

Austin Meadows (OF PIT AAA) has been heating up since his .083 start to the year. A .262/.320/.372 slash line with a .311 wOBA mean he is inching closer to a call-up. His spray chart indicates he is hitting to all fields, which well certainly help the struggling bats in PNC Park shortly.

Adam Engel (OF CWS MLB) was just promoted four days ago to take the place of Tyler Saladino on the 25-man roster. He was hitting just .221/.312/.463 with a .340 wOBA, eight homers, 18 runs, 16 RBI, and three steals when he was promoted. He will likely go back down when Saladino comes back.

Franklin Barreto (SS OAK AAA) was hitting .455 when we last checked on him after just six games in the PCL and now the slash line is .307/.351/.490 and .365 wOBA.  He’s had a burst of power with six homers in 46 games compared to 11 in 123 last year. Late this season is when he should be up.

Amed Rosario (SS NYM AAA) is putting together a heck of a campaign in Vegas this season with a .354/.393/.519 line, .397 wOBA, five homers, 32 runs, 37 RBI, and 10 steals. With the injuries at the MLB level and a 14.7% K rate for Rosario, expect a call-up sooner rather than later.

Jose Berrios (SP MIN MLB) has made four big league starts since mid-May, including Tuesday night. He dominated AAA over 39 innings before the call-up and now boasts a 2.70 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and a 3-1 record for Minnesota. He should stick with the big club this time and is a great pick up, if still available.

Eric Skoglund (SP KC MLB) made his MLB debut on Tuesday night against Detroit and comported himself nicely in 6 1/3 shutout innings. Prior to his call-up he had posted a 4.53 ERA, 4.19 FIP, and 4.26 xFIP and a 1.24 WHIP at Triple-A Omaha. He should be up for at least a few weeks to cover Danny Duffy’s spot.

Francis Martes (SP HOU AAA) was talked about in the Names to Know article in this series when I said a fast start was all he needed to make the Houston club. Well he didn’t do that. A 4.55 ERA, 5.45 FIP, and 5.13 xFIP aren’t great and neither is his 7.28 BB/9 thus far. He has pitched 29.2 innings over seven starts at Fresno. He will need to lower the walk rate and make it through the sixth inning before seeing the bigs.

Lewis Brinson (OF MIL AAA) has been what the Brewers thought he would be to this point with a .304/.395/.481 line, .383 wOBA, four homers and steals, and 31 runs scored. He just needs some more seasoning at this point before Milwaukee brings him to the majors later this season.

Rafael Devers (3B BOS AA) has made the jump to Double-A this season without missing a beat. His .286/.348/.497 slash line are all better than last season’s but his .373 wOBA and .314 BABIP tell slightly differing opinions of his bat. There are no steals to this point, after 18 last year, but he has time still as he won’t come up ‘til 2018 at the earliest.

Anthony Alford (OF TOR MLB) was called up to Toronto on May 19 after a scorching hot start at Double-A. He was promoted due to thinness in the outfield but is now on the shelf for 4-6 weeks due to wrist surgery. He will likely had back down to Triple-A when he’s fully healthy.

Ryan O’Hearn (1B KC AAA) is performing solidly at Triple-A Omaha through 47 games with a .264/.330/.448 slash line, .342 wOBA with seven homeruns, 17 runs, and 18 RBI. The counting stats are ahead of the pace he set last year at Double-A Arkansas through 112 games. He is looking at a September call-up at best this season but could be in line for a big role if Eric Hosmer leaves in free agency.

Brent Honeywell (SP TB AAA) has remained the top-pitching prospect for the Rays with a 4.20 ERA (3.38 FIP), 1.20 WHIP, 11.13 K/9, and 1.80 BB/9 across 10 starts for Triple-A Durham. The Rays rotation continues to be deep and so Honeywell should have time to lower that ERA of his some more before joining the big league club.

Kyle Tucker (OF HOU AA) was just promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday, nabbing a single in his first game. At High-A Tucker posted a .288/.379/.554 slash line with a .407 wOBA, nine homers, 43 RBI, 31 runs, and 13 steals in just 48 games. Still just 20 years old, he is likely a year and a half away from patrolling the outfield in Minute Maid Park.
