Paulo Orlando Headshot

Paulo Orlando went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a stolen base and one walk in the Royals 3-2 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

You don’t really expect Paulo Orlando to turn around a Cole Hamels fastball for a home run but that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night. Orlando parked a no-doubter in the second inning for his second of the season and ninth of his career. The 30-year-old has made the most of his playing time batting .324/.348/.419 over 75 games played. We have no reason to believe that he’ll be removed from the lineup anytime soon. The Royals will face A.J. Griffin on Friday night in Arlington. Orlando is 0-for-2 lifetime against Griffin.

Sam Dyson Headshot

Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth inning in which he walked one batter in the Rangers 3-2 win over the Royals on Thursday.

You usually don’t like to see your closer walk the lead-off man in the top of the ninth in a one run game but it did not cost Dyson on Thursday night. He induced three straight groundouts to end the game and earn his 21st save of the season on 23 attempts. The veteran closer has an ERA of 2.47 and a WHIP of 1.16 over 47 1/3 innings of work. The Rangers will continue their four game series with the Royals on Friday night.

Cole Hamels Headshot

Cole Hamels allowed two runs on six hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts over eight innings in the Rangers 3-2 win over the Royals on Thursday.

Most everyone would have liked to see Hamels finish this one out but after throwing a season-high 123 pitches through eight, the Rangers elected to let Sam Dyson close it out. He also had a season-high 12 strikeouts which moves his total to 132 on the season over 133 1/3 innings pitched. The veteran lefty has a record of 12-2 after notching his third straight win on Thursday night. Hamels will take his 2.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into Wednesday’s start against the Orioles.

Yordano Ventura Headshot

Yordano Ventura allowed three runs on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over eight innings in the Royals 3-2 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

Ventura did have nice control on Thursday night in Texas. He issued just one walk and allowed only four hits on the evening but three of the hits were solo home runs. Rougned Odor got the party started in the second inning followed by Moreland in the fifth and then Moreland again in the eighth which put the Rangers in the lead for good. Ventura lost his fifth straight decision on Thursday and moves his overall record to 6-9 on the season. The ERA stands at 4.88 over 20 starts. We can only hope that he can break the losing streak on Tuesday against the Rays.

Martin Prado Headshot

Martin Prado went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and one run scored in the Marlins 5-4 loss to the Cardinals in Thursday.

Prado got the Marlins to within striking distance of the Cardinals with his two-run blast in the fifth inning off of Michael Wacha. The man is on fire over his last eight games, going 14-for-29 with five multi-hit games in that time. Prado’s line continues to impress at .325/.376/.428 with four home runs and 38 RBI. Mike Leake takes the mound on Friday for the Cardinals and Prado has not faced him since 2014. He is 4-for-19 with a double, lifetime against Leake.

Jeremy Hazelbaker Headshot

Jeremy Hazelbaker went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored in the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Marlins on Thursday.

The Cardinals recalled Hazelbaker just 10-days ago and he has only amassed four hits and four runs scored. On Sunday though, he got the job done as the lead-off man against one of the N.L.’s best pitchers Jose Fernandez. He reached base three times and scored on two of those occasions. He will face Jose Urena for the first time on Friday night. Urena will get just his third start since being recalled from Triple-A. In his two previous outings, he went six and 5 2/3 innings allowing four hits and one run in both outings after 13 appearances.

Matt Holliday Headshot

Matt Holliday went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Marlins on Thursday.

Jose Fernandez gave up two homers in the third innings on Thursday night, one to Diaz and one to Matt Holliday. It is really nice to see Holliday’s power come back parking his 18th home run in 2016 after an injury plagued 2015 season. This 36-year-old is closing in on 20 bombs which would be the 10th time in his career he’s reached that number. The veteran outfielder is hitting .235/.306/.455 on the season. Holliday will face Jose Urena for the first time on Friday night. Urena will get just his third start since being recalled from Triple-A. In his two previous outings, he went six and 5 2/3 innings allowing four hits and one run in both outings after 13 appearances.

Aledmys Diaz Headshot

Aledmys Diaz went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored in the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Marlins on Thursday.

One of the best stories of the Fantasy Baseball season has been the emergence of Aledmys Diaz. The shortstop has shocked the world to the tune of a .313/.378/.523 batting line through 94 games this season. The 25-year-old has 14 homers, 56 RBI, and 64 runs scored in his rookie year. Diaz parked a two-run shot off of Jose Fernandez third inning and added an RBI double in the fifth. He will face Jose Urena for the first time on Friday night. Urena will get just his third start since being recalled from Triple-A. In his two previous outings, he went six and 5 2/3 innings allowing four hits and one run in both outings after 13 appearances.

Jose Fernandez Headshot

Jose Fernandez allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over five innings in the Marlins 5-4 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.

This was not a good outing for Fernandez on Thursday night against the Cardinals. He was popped for two long balls, a two-run shot from Aledmys Diaz and a solo shot from Matt Holliday, over six hits. The K/9 rate continues to be impressive as he picks up another nine strikeouts over just five innings of work. He has a total of 184 strikeouts in 125 2/3 innings this season. Despite the loss, the record stands at 12-5 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP as Fernandez will face a tough challenge on Tuesday night against the Cubs.

Seung-Hwan Oh Headshot

Seung Hwan Oh pitched a scoreless ninth inning allowed one hit in the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Marlins on Thursday.

This 34-year-old rookie converted his third straight save in as many games on Thursday night. Oh has a 1.69 ERA with 69 strikeouts and has only allowed 14 walks over 53 1/3 innings for the Cardinals. He took the closing job from Trevor Rosenthal in June and it doesn’t look like he’ll be giving the job up anytime soon. St. Louis will continue their four game series against the Marlins on Friday night
