Phillies Jonathan Papelbon is likely unavailable to close Thursday as he has pitched three innings over the last two days.

Three very ineffective innings at that as he blew a save and took a loss after giving up the lead in a tie game. With him on the bench, look for Ken Giles to pitch the ninth, if necessary.

Carlos Ruiz is not in the Phillies starting lineup on Thursday.

Day game after a night game means that Ruiz take a seat in favor of the fresher Wil Nieves. This is standard operating procedure for the Phillies, and most teams for that matter, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Ryan Howard is not in the Phillies starting lineup on Thursday.

Manager Ryne Sandberg stated Wednesday that the first base job would split more evenly between Howard and Darin Ruf as the team continues to shop the veteran around the league. Sure, he's got 15 home runs and 60 RBI, but he's also batting just .224 on the year with little or no sign of improvement. Despite back-to-back two-hit games, Howard will sit against right-hander Tim Hudson and Ruf will get the nod and bat sixth Thursday.

John Mayberry received a cortisone shot in his left wrist on Wednesday.

After receiving a cortisone shot, Mayberry will sit for the next week and test his ailing wrist shortly after. If the shot is not successful, the team will have to explore other options, which may lead to a longer stint on the disabled list beyond the minimum 15 days.

Jonathan Papelbon took the loss Wednesday after allowing three runs on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts over one inning of work against the Giants.

He's not really endearing himself to too many teams with a performance like this, especially after it follows another rough outing from the night before. Papelbon takes the loss hear after blowing the save the other night and has now allowed four runs on three hits and two walked with four strikeouts over three innings. He's obviously still a strong candidate to be traded, but outings like these unfortunately increase the chances of more teams looking to use him as a set-up man rather than their closer. His future value obviously lies with where he ultimately ends up so stay tuned.

A.J. Burnett threw eight shutout innings against the Giants on Wednesday. He allowed four hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

This was a great bounce back game for Burnett who put his last start ( 5 IP, 6 ER) behind him and threw his eighth quality start in his last nine outings. His command was surprisingly spotty at times though, as he threw a season-high 131 pitches (76 strikes) and had the four walks, but managed to work his way out of a couple of jams to maintain the shutout performance thanks to 11 ground ball outs. While his performance recently has been outstanding, remember the early-season Burnett and understand that he is very likely to be traded and could end up back int he AL.

Cody Asche is not in the Phillies starting lineup on Wednesday.

Having played all 14 innings Tuesday night, the Phillies are looking to give Asche a day off to rest. He should still be available off the bench, but for now, Andres Blanco will cover third for Wednesday's game.

Ryan Howard is not in the Phillies starting lineup on Wednesday.

Playing the full 14 innings Tuesday night and a lefty on the hill for the Giants Wednesday are the reasons behind this anticipated move. Recently recalled Darin Ruf will handle the work at first base for Wednesday's game.
