Rob Gronkowski is unlikely to play Thursday, but continues to progress.

Gronk has been taking part in the teams 11 on 11 drills in camp but has not yet played in a preseason game. The Patriots are smart not risking a preseason injury on Gronk but they also do not give out any information on their players. We will likely not know if Gronk will play in Week 1 until minutes before kick off and the additional of Tim Wright has done nothing but muddy the water when it comes to Gronk's availability.

Logan Mankins was traded to Tampa Bay -- in exchange for Timothy Wright -- because he refused to take a pay cut.

According to Jason Cole of NFL.com, the 6-time All-Pro Guard was approached by the Patriots on numerous occasions to take a pay cut, but rebuffed their efforts each time. Mankins is a huge addition to Tampa Bay who's interior line was seen as a major liability. The move should be welcomed by Doug Martin owners.

Patriots also put rookie RB Tyler Gaffney and LB Cameron Gordon on injured reserve.

That is brutal news, as both players will miss the entire season with injuries. Gaffney suffered a torn meniscus at the end of July.

Patriots cut sixth-round pick DB Jemea Thomas.

Just because a player gets drafted, doesn't mean they will always make the team, and Thomas getting cut is another example of that.

The Patriots have agreed to the parameters of a trade that will send Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to the Buccaneers for tight end Timothy Wright and a draft pick.

The Patriots had a clear need at tight end with the status of Rob Gronkowski up in the air to start the season and hybrid backs James Develin and Michael Hoomanawanui who typically line up at fullback but have played tight end in the past also on the roster. Wright played in 16 games for the Buccaneers last year making eight starts totaling 571 yards on 54 catches with five touchdowns. Wright went undrafted out of Rutgers last year and signed with the Bucs as a WR but was soon moved to the tight end position. The Patriots will hope Wright will not only provide some insurance should Gronkowski not be ready but also finally fill the void left by Aaron Hernandez. The trading of Logan Mankins will definitely raise some eyebrows as the 5x All-Pro guard was considered one of the best offensive linemen in the league and at least on paper this opens up a huge hole on the Patriots offensive line. According to the Patriots depth chart Josh Kline would move into the starting lineup but the Patriots generally make sure that their offensive linemen are capable of playing each position.

The Patriots will release wide receiver Derrick Johnson on Tuesday, according to a league source.

Buried way down the depth chart, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Not even to Derrick.

Patriots have released TE Justin Jones.

He could be resigned to the practice squad, if some other team doesn't grab him.

ESPN Boston did not list Stevan Ridley on the Patriots projected 53-man roster.

It would be a huge surprise to see the Patriots cut Ridley even though we all know how much Bill Belichick hates the fumble issues. There has been any news indicating the cut, or even the potential of a cut, but should Ridley be let go by New England, there are likely to be a number of teams in contact with him for his services. Of course, this could also just be a simple oversight by ESPN too. Stay tuned.

Patriots have released Defensive end Will Smith and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Sunday.

Smith missed all of last season with a torn ACL, and there wasn't much expected from him this year, but the Kelly release comes as a surprise. Originally believed to be starting alongside Vince Wolfork, the Patriots must have seen something they didn't like for the long-term. Kelly's season ws cut short last year due to a knee injury, so maybe there are some lingering issues. His name-recognition alone should get him a few invitations from other teams now, though.
