Head coach Ron Rivera says Cam Newton probably will start Sunday.

Rivera has tried to remain optimistic ever since the car accident put Newton on the shelf before Week 15. You should probably wait to see what happens at practice over the next two days if you want to use him, but we think he's a huge risk considering the back injury.

DeAngelo Williams was limited in Thursday's practice.

Williams might be able to play this week against the Browns, but you're not going to want to use him at all as Jonathan Stewart will likely see the majority of work out of the Pantheres' backfield. Consider him day-to-day though.

Cam Newton (back) returned to practice Thursday.

The Panthers are still going to wait until Friday to announce their starting quarterback, though Newton seems to be the way coach Ron Rivera wants to lean. If Newton's back with his fractured vertebrae can withstand the rigors of an NFL game, then he'll play. However, be warned that he could just as easily be removed from the game if he gets too banged-up again.

Panthers will likely make a call on Frank Alexander?s (suspension) status for this week on Saturday.

Alexander was suspended for violating the leagues substance abuse policy which caused him to miss the first 14 games of the season. The Panthers have a roster exemption to decide whether or not to activate Alexander so there is no league pressure placed on them to make a roster move.

DeAngelo Williams (hand) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

Williams has missed the Panthers previous two games with a hand injury with Jonathan Stewart carrying the load. If Williams is once again out of the lineup Stewart will continue to see all the carries he can handle.

Cam Newton (back) and Derek Anderson split reps fairly in Wednesday's practice.

Great, we thought that after practice we'd get a better idea of who is starting in Week 16 and now your guess is as good as ours. The players split reps which basically means Cam Newton has a 50/50 shot of playing in Week 16.

Frank Alexander practiced Wednesday for first time since preseason after two drug-related suspensions totaling 14 games.

You should not expect big things from Alexander him in his return. He'll be a rotational reserve for the Panthers' undermanned defensive line. Alexander has 3.5 sacks across 28 NFL games.

Browns coach Mike Pettine "fully expects" Cam Newton to play against them Sunday.

It's good that Mike Pettine is so sure that Cam Newton is going to play on Sunday but Fantasy owners will rely on the Panthers to keep us informed. Tuesday was an off day for the team but they want an early decision on Newton's Week 16 status. We should know after practice on Wednesday if Derek Anderson was taking first team reps.

Cam Newton worked out on underwater treadmill, did some rotational exercises and team plans to have him attempt throws Tuesday.

It's all going to come down to comfort for Newton and a decision won't be made until very late in the week. If he can play without discomfort, and that means when being tackled as well, Newton will start on Sunday. He is going to layer up the protective gear and continue to work out under center to test things out. Using him, though, is going to be a huge risk as you just don't know if he is going to last he whole game.

Frank Alexander was reinstated from suspension and the team has been granted a roster exemption for him.

Alexander was suspended for the first four games of the year, but then was suspended 10 more for a second violation of the substance abuse policy. Alexander hasn't played yet this year, but did record 3.5 sacks between 2012 and 2013 for the Panthers.
