Miami Marlins eligible for free agency declared Thursday. Right-handers Kevin Gregg and Brad Penny, second baseman Rafael Furcal and utility man Reed Johnson.

None of these releases should be surprising as most of them are far past their prime.

Marlins activated Jose Fernandez from the 60-day disabled list.

Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery after making eight starts this past season. He should be ready to go at the start of spring training in February.

Marlins are expected to exercise Jeff Mathis' $1.5 million club option for 2015.

Mathis has never been known for his bat but for $1.5 million you can't do much worse for a back up catcher.

Giancarlo Stanton will likely wear a helmet with a face guard like Jason Heyward.

Stanton was having a career year until he was hit in the face by a pitch. Stanton's 2014 season ended with a .284 average, 37 home runs, 105 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases. Stanton should be a first round pick in 2015 without a doubt.

Giancarlo Stanton has been awarded the Hank Aaron award, acknowledging the National League's best hitter for 2014.

Another incredible season for Stanton as the Marlins outfielder posted a .288/.395/.555 slash line and tied a career-high with 37 home runs. He also set career-best marks in RBI (105), runs scored (89) and stolen bases (13) while maintaining a fantastic 14.7-percent walk rate and reducing his strikeout rate for a second-consecutive season. The fact that this is his third 30-plus home run season and he's only 24-years old is downright scary. He's very likely to be a top-five overall pick in 2015.

Jordany Valdespin was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.

The 26-year old utility man was suspended for the first 50 games of last season following the Biogenesis probe. He was eventually called up from the minors in July, and hit just .214 with three home runs and and ten RBI in 52 games. If he accepts his assignment, he'll be on Triple-A New Orleans' roster in the offseason.

Jose Fernandez (Tommy John Surgery) second throwing session went well, with no reported problems.

A mid-to-late May seems to be the tentative target date for Fernandez' return. Obviously that's closer to best-case than anything else, but it is somewhat encouraging for fantasy owners, particularly those in keeper leagues. Just don't go all-in here and get crazy with drafting him next year. Missing the first month of the season isn't too traumatic, but should he suffer a setback and find himself re-injured, something we've seen from quite a few Tommy John veterans, it could end up being a busted season again. You must factor that in when assigning value in 2015.

Jose Fernandez made 25 throws from 30 feet Wednesday at Marlins Park.

Jose Fernandez had Tommy John surgery back in Mary and today was about to make 25 throws from a distance of 30 feet. This will be a long journey back for Fernandez but today was the first step in the right direction. He is expected to be sidelined until around mid-season in 2015.

Jose Fernandez (Tommy John surgery) will begin to play catch in the coming days.

Fernandez won't be ready for the start of the season and might not even pitch until sometime in the second half. It's tough to stash a guy like that because, while he looked phenomenal before surgery, we just don't know how effective he'll be once he's back.

Henderson Alvarez fell to 12-7 after he allowed one run on 11 hits and no walks with three strikeouts over seven innings in the Marlins loss to the Nationals on Sunday.

Thus concludes the best season of Alvarez's career. His 3.57 FIP and xFIP are not as good as his 2.65 ERA, and considering he struck out only 111 batters in 30 starts, his fantasy value for next season is limited.
