Geno the last QB to be taken in the second round by the Jets, prior to them selecting Christian Hackenberg Friday night. Smith has not shown an ability to be a long-term starting option in the 31 appearances he's had in his career. With Ryan Fitzpatrick out of the fold, at least for the time being, Smith is the top option going into summer workouts. New York also has Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the roster unless Fitzpatrick re-signs.
Here is the third big name player for the Clippers to go down in this series against Portland. First Chris Paul broke his hand and then Blake Griffin went down with a serious quad injury. Jordan went up for a rebound and wound up landing awkwardly on his foot and rolling his ankle pretty seriously. It is possible however that he could return with it being such a close game. He will likely have the ankle re-evaluated on Saturday.
Buschmann made his major league debut earlier this season with Arizona but since then has been nothing more than average at best. The Diamondbacks claimed Edwin Escobar off waivers on Friday and need a roster spot for the new acquisition making Buschmann the odd man out, He will have to pass through waivers before being optioned to Triple-A or released.
Adams has received the start at first base in each of the Cardinals past two games and he took advantage of it tonight as he hit his second home run of the season. He has struggled overall this season and has not received regular playing time. With that in mind, he could very well be out of the lineup tomorrow when the Cardinals take on Joe Ross and the Nationals.
It was never meant to be for Leake tonight as he surrendered a home run to the first batter of the game and things didn’t improve from there. Leake is now 0-3 on the season with a 5.83 ERA which makes the contract he received this offseason look absurd. He will look to turn things around in his next scheduled start against the Phillies on Wednesday.
The 1-for-4 night at the dish actually managed to raise A-Rod’s average to .194 on the season, while fantasy owners will be pleased to know that his one hit was a home run over the Green Monster. once he really begins to settle in at the dish this season, expect his average and power to even out more towards his expected numbers.
Taylor led off the game with a home run but didn’t record a hit the rest of the game. He has struggled mightily this season as is indicated by his .195 average and 26 strikeouts in only 77 at-bats. He will lose his starting role to Ben Revere as soon as Revere is healthy enough to return, which should be sometime in the coming week. In the meantime, Taylor will face left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia tomorrow, though facing southpaws has given him no advantage this season.
The home run was Papi’s fourth on the season, as along with another single, he raised his average to a surprising .307 in this, his final season. Expect the power to continue, while his average should dip slightly going forward.
Espinosa launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning off of Mike Leake. It was his first of the season. Espinosa has been terrible for much of the season and if he doesn’t pick it up he will likely lose at-bats to Stephen Drew or Trea Turner as the season progresses. He will likely start tomorrow when the Nationals take on left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia, though Espinosa has struggled equally against lefties and righties this season.
While he’s blown up already twice so far this season, Kimbrel has been otherwise relatively clean, as he has only allowed two total hits in his seven other appearances combined. It is no secret that he is one of the most talented relievers in the game, so once he gets comfortable with Boston, he should return to being one of the more reliable ones as well.
